“Comfortable and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2009

One of the trickier things about this place was trying to find it! Set in a residential area, there was only a small sign telling you the name of the place.

We opted to stay in a 'hotel' style room rather than an apartment. We found it modern, clean and comfortable- very well equipped with a DVD player and stereo system, which was impressive! Room was somewhat on the small side, with the main room comprising of the bed and a desk (see pics). The bathroom was also very nice and clean, maybe a little too modern as the shower was interesting- designed in such a way that it lacked a door, and as a result, half the bathroom gets a bit wet when you shower!!
Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go for a dip in the pool, however, the outdoor area looked superb for relaxing.

The location of the hotel, was excellent, it was only a few mins walk to the main shops (including coles) and restaurants, cafes etc.

  • Liked — Great online rates, location
  • Disliked — Parking in their carpark was very limited- ended up parking on the street all the time

After reading all these wonderful comments about the Oaks Lure in Nelson Bay, we stayed for 3 nights in one of their hotel room. It is certainly a new building but to our horror, the room is tiny, barely able to move around with 2 people, there's no bath tub, and worse of all, they lied to us. The website advised the room featured king bed but we discovered that this is made up by two single beds pushing together. There's this big gap in the middle of the "so call king bed". The room has no view. We fled a day earlier than planned as we would rather be at home than paying money for this claustrophobic room.

We stayed in a one bedroom appartment which had a loungeroom and kitchen in it and a balcony leading off it was the bedroom with an onsuite. Very spacious. All very modern and in excellant condition. Having read other peoples comments about the stairs we asked for an appartment without any stairs. We noted that the appartments in one wing of the building has stairs in the corridore and that some appatments have staircases in the midde of the appartment. The building is clean and well maintained. It is situated near the shopping district on top of a steep hill.

  • Liked — new building, close to amenities and size of appartment
  • Disliked — It is on a steep hill.

We arrived after 6pm but didn't realise it would be a late check-in. Received a phone call on the way there giving us clear directions what to do when we arrived. No problems at all. Lovely appointed room with downstairs sitting area & extra TV which was a generous size. Also had an outside courtyard area, which was quite pleasant. The view was not the best, but nothing you can do about new building being built - could still see glimpses of the bay. Really close to everything - only had to walk a short distance to bowling club, restaurants, pubs, shops, and the lovely sparkling marina. Will definitely come again - perhaps with the kids staying in an apartment.

  • Liked — cleanliness and comfort
  • Disliked — exhaust fan in the bathroom was really loud and stayed on after the light was off

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment at the Oaks Lure in Nelson Bay and were impressed by the spaciousness of the unit. Despite the king size bed and a huge wardrobe there was still a lot of space to move about. The apartment is very modern and clean and has a great kitchen with top appliances. We cooked ourselves a wonderful dinner before going out to the movies. The very competitive price of the unit was another factor that had convinced us to choose the place. Truly impressed!!

We stayed at the Oaks Lure in Nelson Bay for 5 nights at the start of our Australian holiday. We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment which was really beautiful and was exactly as we had hoped it would be. We had a small secluded garden with covered patio which was a real suntrap. We found the staff to be very polite, friendly and helpful.
The resort and surrounding areas were quiet but very picturesque and perfect for a 'chill out' before we faced the hussle and bussle of Sydney. We especially ilked One Mile Beach, a short distance away at Anna Bay and the boat trip to see the dolphins.
There was not a huge choice of restaurants, but enough for our short visit.

The Oaks Group - any review on these guys should start with gerat..... but the staff need some awakening. I have actually used this place a couple of times now simply because it is modern, convenient and most of all cheap.

My first stay had some teething issues discovered as the smoke detectors would go off with the morining breakfasts being cooked and there would be fire engine call outs & alarms being set off daily at about 7am....this has been somewhat fixed in my last stay with only my room alarm going off & a call to check we weren't burnt alive.

I also arrived and had no towels or soap & discovered some food in the freezer...the good thing was they did discount me further due to those issues.

The staff again were not so bad as the big brother at the Pacific Blue in Salamander, although you do get what i call the "politefully" rude service when asking for basic requests such as extra toweling. Another issue i found was when the apartments were being serviced i was gobsmacked to see a young lady on a mobile call having an argument as she travelled through the corridors swearing at the reciever using the F bomb, I had my young child with me at the time.

Ok..done with the bad.

The great thing about this was you can get a 1 bedroom that's quite large although there are 2 options. Mostly you will be put into a room that has a normal entry then quite a few stairs leading to the apartment which older people & kids could struggle with. The other is to ask for the rooms with no stairs which are smaller but are essentially a walkin in that most would be used to.....and are FEW.

TV's are not as flash as the LCD's at the Pacific Blue & you only get one but no big deal really. Pool is small lap pool with a baby pool next to it & is ok if few people are using it, they did not have the BBQ in the BBQ area that was signed but i believe this has been fixed. You can get a view of the bay or you may end up with a view of the local streets..again to be expected.

Great bathrooms, large and clean, small kitchen but enough to get by. I will use this place for quick stays as i believe there is potential to improve ...and it's cheap always check internet pricing.

Cheers
