“Wonderful experience in Nelson Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2009

We stayed at Nelson Bay B&B for a night on our way to Sydney. We were extremely impressed with the owner's hospitality - he really did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable! We stayed in the Spa Suite, and the room was very comfortable, clean and modern. The spa is located in an alcove just outside the room and was a relaxing treat for us after a day in the car. The kitchen and living room is located next to the bedrooms, but unlike some B&Bs, it is separate to the host's living quarters, so you can really enjoy some privacy and not have to worry about getting in the way.

Locationwise, the B&B is on the road into town, and is only a short walk or even shorter drive from the Nelson Bay shopping district. The host provided us with some fantastic info on what to see and do in the local area. For anyone visiting, a walk to the top of one of the local mountains provides amazing views of the bay, and you can also inspect some old WWII gun emplacements. On the way up we saw some very interesting bushland, and even a couple of echidnas!

Breakfast the next morning was very nice. Freshly baked bread, juice, cereal, fresh fruit and yoghurt were provided and there was certainly more than enough to go round. We also enjoyed making friends with the host's dog and cat - a great touch for a B&B.

All in all, we'd recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a place to stay in Nelson Bay. The hosts are very welcoming and it has a nice, friendly atmosphere.

We stayed at this bed and breakfast recently after reading the good reviews here but were left disappointed. When we arrived in our room there were no bath towels nor a bath mat and after getting no reply to a ring on the owner's doorbell were forced to find our own towels! Breakfast was dismal with the owner coming in at very random times to offer us toasted bread. The yoghurts were past their sell by date, we had to make everything ourselves. The oats were not replenished during our stay there. The rooms were not serviced during our three night stay at all. The rooms were very small with not much space to move around. There were cobwebs behind the curtains. We thought that it was extremely overpriced. We would love to return to Port Stephens but definitely would not stay at Nelson Bay bed and breakfast again!

Nice place with small but well-designed, comfortable bedrooms, individual decks facing the forest, a larger, commodious common room with breakfast tables couches, DVD/CD library, fridge/coffee/tea, and good reading material on what to do in the Port Stephens area. Nice patio with picnic table/barbeque facing the woods in back. Good value for money and good location. Some small details (in the owner's absence) were a little patchy: the first key we were given didn't fit with our room, no ground coffee available for brewing the next morning, and no spare toilet paper available when our roll ran out. These were all rectified by the second day of our stay. We had a slight misunderstanding over breakfast time (we weren't aware breakfast isn't served until 8:30 a.m. and didn't see any info explaining that). Nevertheless a good place to stay.

  • Liked — Well designed, good value, comfy beds
  • Disliked — Staff service a little patchy

I found this little B&B when browsing through the internet looking for accommodation - and what a fab little find!

The B&B has 3 rooms, attached to but separate from the owners house. We booked the Spa room which has a hot jacuzzi type bath on your own private enclosed balcony. Our room was exceptionally clean and welcoming ( I had a peek at the other two bedrooms which were unoccupied on our second night there and they were the same standard but without the spa bath). The bedrooms all are en-suite and have tv/dvd in room. There is a guest lounge with a huge library of dvd,s free to help yourself to if you fancy a night in, in your comfy room. In the guest lounge there is also a kitchenette area with complimentary teas, coffees, cookies and a fridge with juice - all help yourself. The three tables for breakfast are also in the lounge but if the weather is kind you can also eat your breakfast on the veranda which backs onto a wonderful tree filled landscape which to my delight hosts a myriad of birdlife. We stood for about 10 minutes on our first evening there on the verandah and saw parrotts and kookaburras!

The breakfast is continental style with fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals and fabulous fresh baked bread.

The hosts Trish and Ian are so welcoming and very helpful with information of the surrounding area. It was a pleasure to chat with them. They were so amenable but without being intrusive.
Special mention to their lovely pets Suzie the dog and Reggie the cat!

The B&B is situated up a lane parrallel to the main road in and out of Nelson Bay. There are signs from the road and we had no problems finding the house.

The only slightly negative point to make is the guest "quarters" and the driveway are up a fairly steep hill so those less mobile may find it a slight challenge.

All in all a wonderful couple of nights and I would have no hesitation in recommending this lovely B&B.

We were late arriving and had some problems finding it in the dark since the map (from their website) and description isn't that accurate but, having made a call, we find the right road although it took a word with a neighbour to find the right house since the sign isn't lit. I also checked other mapping websites and none of them show the side road where the B&B is located.

The driveway is very steep but has parking for 3 cars and we were made welcome by the owner, Trish, who lead us up the well-lit but steep path and up the steps to the outdoor lobby of the purpose-built guest accommodation.

She lead us into a large modern (with a few quirky objects d'art scattered around) breakfast room/lounge and indicated where the free tea (big range of leaf & bag tea), (real) coffee & home-made biscuits
were. The room had tables laid (but covered) for breakfast and a large collection of books and DVD/Videos neatly stowed for guest use.

We were then showed to our room which was light and airy with two sets of towels and white/acid green bedding and decor. She also showed the private en-suite deck containing the jaccuzi. We asked about dining and she gave us some suggestions to try but rightly said
we should drive the 5min trip down town straight away to ensure we got a table as it was getting towards 8.00pm.

After an excellent seafood meal at the Sandpiper restaurant, we returned armed with a bottle of aussi champagne to try out the jacuzzi - only to find the sign we had missed before saying it wasn't
to be used between 10.30pm and 9am - although it was suggested it could be used for a bubble bath - which we enjoyed (though not the best soaps/shampoo we've been offered).

After a very comfortable night in the high-quality bed linen, we met up with the other guests who were just being given extensive tips on the attractions of the area by Trish. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast although it would be nice to have freshly squeezed orange juice (NSW is full of citrus farms). The toasted home made bread was great but spoilt by the single portion jams and "factory" honey.

We paid AU$118 for the night and feel it was excellent value compared
with a bland chain hotel and would stay there again.

My wife and I stayed for two nights at the Nelson Bay B&B on our recent trip to Australia. We found it to be a very well-maintained B&B with excellent hosts.

The B&B has three rooms, one of which has a spa on a balcony outside the room. We were lucky enough to get the spa room for our stay. The bedroom was very clean and nicely decorated, though not all that large. The rooms each have a DVD player, and they have a pretty extensive DVD collection if you want to have a night in. The B&B is separate from the hosts' home, and it does require a short uphill walk (and a few stairs) from the driveway to get in.

This property is located just outside the main part of Nelson Bay on a little frontage road that parallels the main road into town. It's a bit of a walk to downtown (probably 10-15 minutes), or a very short drive. Some of the other communities in Port Stephens (such as Anna Bay, Salamander Bay, etc.) are several km away, so it's best to have a car. The upside to the location is that it is essentially bushland right out the back door. We heard the laughs of the kookaburras and saw a variety of other birds from the outdoor patio. (see attached photo)

The owners of the B&B, Trish and Iain, were superb. We didn't talk to Iain much, but Trish was always available to answer our questions, and she booked a couple of tours for us. She knows the area very well, and provided great recommendations of activities and restaurants.

The rate we booked only included a continental breakfast, which was just fine -- it included some tasty fresh-baked breads. A cooked breakfast was also available.

There are all sorts of attractions in Port Stephens, the most popular probably being the dolphin and whale cruises. We went on the 1.5-hour "Imagine" dolphin cruise, and saw probably a hundred dolphins in the bay. (Our visit was not during whale season.) We also took a short tour of the nearby Stockton Sand Dunes, including sandboarding, which was a fun experience. The views from out on the dunes were remarkable.

There are plenty of other activities to keep you busy for several days in the area as well (wineries, hiking, swimming, beaches, etc.) As such, I would definitely recommend a side trip to Port Stephens if you're visiting Sydney, and we found the Nelson Bay B&B to be an excellent place to stay while there!
