We recently returned from a weekend stay at the Peninsular Motor Inn Nelson Bay. We were glad to have booked this on a voucher deal and would have been very disappointed if we had paid the full rate. The rooms have been nicely refreshed, and for a 3 1/2 star motel quite acceptable however the "balcony" advertised was unuseable as it was so narrow that it could only fit a small chair sidewyas, and the "outlook" was the colourbond fence 1 metre away and unit block next door. Given the motel was not at full occupancy, and that other vacant rooms had a much nicer outlook, we sensed that we were treated like the poor counsins because we had a discount voucher. This was confirmed the following morning at at the very basic breakfast (no fruit of any sort, no yoghurt - only toast, scrambled eggs and bacon). When I asked if they could provide poached eggs instead, we were grandly told that as we were voucher holders and they'd have to boil the water to poach the eggs, this was not possible. We were then advised that the cereal was out of bounds unless we paid extra - go figure, you'd think that they would prefer people to fill up on cereal, rather than bacon and eggs? Coffee - help yourself to powdered coffee satchets of a cheap brand "coffee" and boiled water! Wake up Australian hospitality industry. You wonder why people don't bother travelling in Australia and take their tourist dollars overseas - its' called value for money. With a few relatively low cost improvements this motel could be good - in its current form it is only average and I wouldn't be coming back unless it was at a heavily iscounted price.
