“great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

Well I was impressed we stayed for two nights the owner Tom was very helpful the room was well aired and very clean, has its own balcony with all amenities, all we needed for our stay, the outside entertaining area was a big plus with a well appointed barbeque with tables and chairs, we will be back for sure and I have recommended this motel to family and friends.

Stayed for one night on trip up the east coast with our two teenage sons. They had the room next to us. The owner was extremely helpful and pleasant. Location of motel was lovely - just a short walk to the pretty harbour. The room were a little dark (exposed brick walls) and quite chilly even though we had a little heater.

A very good deal. The owner knows how to treat his guests. A simple hotel, but clean and inviting. I will use it again.

This motel is located in a quiet residential area, but less than ten minutes walk from the centre of Nelson Bay. There are some ground-floor rooms, but the majority of rooms are on the first floor, with parking underneath. The rooms are equipped with kettle, microwave, toaster, fridge, flat-screen TV and a small balcony with chairs. There were daily supplies of good-quality tea, coffee and, most important, biscuits! There are also bench seats on the first-floor walkway, should your balcony be too hot or shaded.

We chose Nelson Bay because we intended to do a lot of scuba diving. The Motor Lodge is only two minutes drive from the shore-diving site of Fly Point. The other shore-diving sites of Pipeline and Halifax Park, the local dive shop and marina are all within five minutes drive.

On arrival, we were greeted by Tom, the friendly and very helpful owner. He offered all sorts of useful tips on the area, including local restaurants and sightseeing. Tom has obviously encountered scuba divers before, but we felt that his assistance was above and beyond the call of duty. Not only did he allow us to rinse our salty dive gear on the premises, but a drying rack was thoughtfully placed upstairs for our wetsuits. At the end of our three-week stay, we needed to ship our borrowed scuba tanks back to a friend in Melbourne. Tom kindly made arrangements with a local carrier and he took care of the tanks, which were not collected until two days after we had left. Excellent service.

I would not hesitate to recommend this motel to travellers in general and scuba divers in particular.

I have been traveling both alone, with family and friends, nearly all over the world and a more pleasant and service minded owner and staff than in Port Stephens Motor Lodge is hard to find! You just remember that!

We arrived to Nelson bay, "just to se the dolphins" and hadn’t booked any rooms. Stupid! The journey was longer than we’d expected, it was late and of cause full everywhere! With help from friendly people of Port Stephens, we found Tom at the Motor Lodge, who not only waited for us past hours, but set us up in a nice room for the most reasonable fee.
He helped us to book the dolphin tour and invited us to come along as he did his daily tours in the area. He was the most generous guide and your stay became so much more.
He and his helper - the Canadian Kathy took so well care of us so we soon felt like "Family visiting"! Our one night booked, soon became three - not only to celebrate Tom’s birthday, but without these gentle “peoples people” we got out so much more of our stay.
The room was in super condition, clean with extras - which I specially enjoy while waking up early then a nice tee or coffee is a blessing - but we slept like logs in the comfortable beds  :-)
And the breakfast Tom quickly fixed to us was nice, ordinary and so yummy!
It was a short walk to the beach and Tom and Kathy tipped us about other areas and restaurants. It was so nice to stay there and now I cherish the memories, sitting by the pool with a glass of wine and to cheer a meal with them, laughing and talking about living on the other side of the earth. When I go back to Australia – I’ll be back :-)

My wife and I stayed at the Pt Stephens Motel in early Feb 2011. Tom the owner has put a great deal of thought into the rooms, with Kettle (tea/coffee/milk) microwave, fridge and toaster. The room had a a full size double and single beds, which had a balcony and the benefit of air con. I liked the heavy duty curtains in the room which shut out the light when you wanted it.
Tom arranged a dolphin boat trip for us and recommended local restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and exchanged stories of guests...we also run a B&B in Sevenoaks, Kent, UK - Yew Tree Barn, so know the intricacies of trying to please guests. I would recommend staying at this motel......this is my second attempt to write a review - the first appeared not to upload.
