“Tired but tidy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

We stayed between Xmas & new year. I was dreading staying there as we couldn't get accommodation at better hotels. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The room was very large we had 301, family spa room with 2 comfortable queen beds, it was serviced daily and large bathroom. It is all very dated but clean. The location is very central and you can walk to shops, theatre, restaurants, beach etc.
Would I stay again? Probably not but it is ok.

I think the only thing this hotel has going for it is its location, very close to the hub of Nelson Bay. Otherwise, very old and shabby, in desparate need of an upgrade. We were just passing through Nelson Bay and booked 1 night stay, thinking how bad can it be given everything else was booked out over Xmas..

Well, we could hear loudly other people and kids in the hallways and outside in the pool, as well as every time someone turned the tap or shower on or flushed the toilet in the other rooms....It felt so noisy during the day, we could only imagine how amplified all the noises would be during the night...and given that I am pregnant and have troubles sleeping anyway, it was becoming unbearable...

Ohh..and yes, how could I forget, and the overwhelming smell in the room...the smell of a vomit...

So we decided to check out on the same day we checked in, as it just wasn't the place for us.

Thank you to the man at the reception who kindly agreed to refund token amount of money to us given we've paid the full rate. Your gesture is very much appreciated.

Reading some of the reviews here, I was a bit worried about booking a room but was limited for choice due to the late booking.
We grabbed a Nelson room so were on the 3rd floor with a balcony and spa overlooking the marina.
Wow, for $125, a spa, a great sunset, the room was large and clean. Furniture was matching and in good condition. Air con is a bit old and yes, some parts of the outside could do with a bit of a touch up. But, considering you can't get anything in neighbouring Newcastle for under $140 and that doesn't include any view or a spa, I was pleasantly surprised.
Great location, 2 minute walk to the main shopping strip, 5 min to the marina.
I would happily stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: Spend the bit extra and go for a room above the ground floor. The view is definately worth it.

We stayed in a balcony room on the 4th floor, beautiful view. Office staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are in need of an upgrade - in a 70's time warp! Could be a little better equiped. Bed was comfortable - could hear next doors shower though and on returning to room could smell the restaurant which was on the 4th floor too! Short walk to Marina or shops from resort.

Room Tip: Balcony room for the views

We were looking for a break away and decided to book the Marina Resort on a room upgrade deal. As part of the deal we were upgraded from the Nelson Room to the Harbour Room. We stayed for two nights mid week during school holidays. I travelled with my partner and two youngest boys aged two and one. On arrival you see the property is an older style one, however inside it was clean and check in staff were friendly. Our room was a good size, had terrific water views, it was clean and comfortable. The room had a queen size bed, a single bed and fold out. It had a table and chairs inside and as well as chairs on the balcony (which we moved inside because of the height of the balcony railing and our two boys who are honing their climbing skills). There was also a microwave in the room. We had a busy couple of days, the weather was overcast and wet but we didn't spend a lot of time at our accommodation as there is plenty to do. The motel is short walking distance from the marina, tour departures, town centre, clubs and restaurants. There is plenty of parking too. During our stay we never ate at the resort restaurant but a buffet breakfast was well priced at $15 for adults and $7.50 for children and the daily 3 course dinner specials were $30. All is all it seemed good value for money.

Room Tip: All rooms face the Marina, the higher the better the views. Our room had a older style spa bath as w...
