Description: Our Philosophy Organic and Recycled At Mavis's we grow much of our own produce and pick fresh from our garden every day.We also source locally grown ORGANIC produce wherever possible, support sustainable farming practices and minimal food miles, and we recycle, reuse and compost as much as possible.Mavis's is dedicated to fresh and organic meals. As well as providing the freshest, tastiest ingredients, our bio-dynamic organic garden, is also home to a worm farm and chooks (who also provide us with organic "happy" eggs for our dishes) where we recycle kitchen greens and organic materials. This helps us to reduce our environmental impact by eliminating our landfill "green waste". Other produce and menu ingredients are sourced from local organic meat and vegetable farms, which results in less fuel used in transport, and you'll notice the taste difference too!

“Declining Dining”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

Overpriced and over rated. If you like to pay upmarket prices, have a plastic tub of cutlery on your table (set your place yourself as the staff obviously don't) and the owner's attitude is that he is doing you a favour, actually a very big favour letting you pay to eat in his cafe, then this is the place for you. Because there is no competition nearby, the customer suffers. The staff were friendly enough, slow (had to remind them about bread after 10 minutes wait). But the waiter stood at the head of the table and yelled Salmon! and you had to stop conversation to get your meal. Another Salmon! etc. So our table of 9 was interrupted 9 times, and other diners knew what we were having, and likewise we knew what they were having. Fine dining it aint. Ours was a table of locals who brought visitors often - no longer. We had the cheek to bring a birthday cake, and even tho we offered to pay 'cakeage' were told no deal, tho slices were eventually brought to the table. The bad taste won't go away.

“Great food, great location if a tad overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

We stopped in for a light lunch. All the mains were quite large and $$$ so we opted for an entrée sharing plate for $30. It was really nice but not nearly enough bread . We ordered a side of bread.
Everything was enjoyable until we paid and were charged $5.50 for a slice of bread when we had already spent $30 for an entree plus drinks.

“The Secret Cabin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

My wife and I enjoyed a three day retreat at the secret cabin, part of the Mavis's Kitchen accommodation options. The setting was truly idyllic and peaceful, and the accommodation was ever so eco-friendly. As part of the midweek deal, we also received gorgeous daily meals from the restaurant. The location and building were outstanding, with gorgeous gardens and beautiful views. The food was simply divine, and very much representative of the local produce in the Murwillumbah area. We found the service to be personal, caring and outstanding, and the whole package represented a truly excellent rural experience. The quality of this business appears to be reaping rewards for this area of northern NSW tucked in the hinterland beneath Mount Warning. We would especially recommend the secret cabin for couples wanting to get away from city life in order to find seclusion, and tranquility. Loved it!

“Beautiful location - not family friendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Beautiful spot, we all enjoyed the food but they weren't family friendly. We were there with 3 families including 6 toddlers. We were watched like hawks from the management and were told off a couple of times for silly things. It operated like a tavern in that you had to go up and order your meals at the register up stairs yet we weren't able to pay at that point and they insisted one payment at the end and would not split the bill.

“Mavis Kitchen Murwillumbah”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

We dined here for dinner with a family group of 14 people, on 14.9.13. We chose this restaurant as we were told it was a beautiful location with great food. We were not at all disappointed with the amazing location, however we were disappointed with the quality of the meals. Overall the meals were small and both meals and service were not at all on par with the pricing. For example, those of us who ordered salmon were served with a dry piece of salmon (approx 60x40x25mm)at least half the size described by our waitress when ordered, and served with a drizzle of salad and dressing. The starters of sour dough and antipasto were small, very dry and served with just olives and pastrami.
One of our entrees was sized and priced as a main. We were unable to bring our own birthday cake, but they were happy to make a cake to order and charge us $8.50 per head. They were not prepared to split the bill, and though many restaurants have similar policies, it presented difficulties for us as we were such a large group and it was an isolated location with no teller machines within a 15 min radius. Despite booking ahead our group was split and placed on two seperate tables and staff had to consult with management before begrudgingly moving the tables together (our tables were on a verandah and moving them did not affect any other diners). Perhaps a devonshire tea during the day would be preferrable if planning to visit this restaurant, as their scones (ordered for desert) were amazing).
