“Not cheap but worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

If you don't mind spending money and like a nice view, this is worth a visit.
However, the reservation set up is rather puzzling. Booking direct started at $250/night. Booking through Wotif started at $200/night (plus booking fee). I was advised by the charming reservations lady at Bannisters to book through Wotif as the price was not negotiable. So the message is - don't expect a good price going direct.
People don't seem to mind paying, as Bannisters was pretty full for a mid week night in the depths of winter.
Rooms are just about ok for the money - you are paying for the view. Which are pretty good. A long way from the beach though. Hence the views. Don't bring the kids.
The bar lounge set up will force people to share lounge sofas if they want comfort and views at the same time. Tip is to get there early and score the best spot.
The restaurant is pricey, but the food and service was up to scratch. So we were not unhappy.
Service was satisfactory. Unusual to have young men attend to room servicing immediately after checkout.
Will we return? Probably. With a full wallet. But we will check around for the best price first.

Finally had an opportunity to stay at Bannisters and it lives up to its reputation.

Chose to splurge on one of the suites. The true beauty of the place doesn’t really show itself until after you’ve checked in and arrived at your room. Every room faces out to the gorgeous ocean views.

Our suite was so well appointed we didn’t want to leave. Very clean and plenty of space to chill out plus 2 private outdoor spaces.
Overall it was the little details that made it really luxurious: things like the the heated bathroom floor and towel racks, and re-chargeable electric tea lights (candle lit bubble bath anyone?). Great quality bed linens and a very comfy King bed. Also included free wifi and an ipod/iphone dock (it amazes me that some 5 star hotels still don’t provide these as standard inclusions in 2012).
Unlike top city hotels, we felt made welcome by all the little additions and it was a room we wanted to spend time in. The gardens we looked out onto were immaculate. We were directly above the restaurant and there were no noise issues at all.

The staff were great. All were friendly and relaxed with professional and swift service. The staff have a real team/family feel which is probably thanks to the location (i.e real locals work there) and the General Manager Peter, who was very visible and a superb host.

The menu in Rick Stein’s restaurant features mostly seafood options as you would expect. The fish pie and the lamb were both excellent, be prepared to pay Sydney hatted restaurant prices. Worth it. We had many cocktails in the pool bar which was really cosy considering it was such a cold night.
Speaking of food, a cooked breakfast was included with our room. Continental breakfast is set out buffet style, then we were able to select a hot cooked breakfast from the menu which was made to order. Nice.

Lots of great touches at Bannisters. We’ll be back. Didn't get to try the day spa, good excuse to go back.
If you want to spoil yourself, go south and try Bannisters!

My husband and I recently returned to spend a few beautiful relaxing days with the wonderful crew at Bannisters, with a special thank you to Peter. What does one say about this gorgeous spot? The food and delightful staff at Rick Stein’s restaurant top class, along with a delicious breakfast served at your table. The rooms are well appointed and the views over the ocean are amazing. If you want somewhere to unwind in style and comfort this is a great choice....This visit we were unable to attend the spa but I'm sure during our next stay we will certainly be making time.....

At $250 a night (which includes an incredible breakfast), you hope when you book that it's going to be a bit special....Bannisters Point Lodge doesn't disappoint. This midweek reduced tariff had me a little concerned, after all, that is a 5 star, top of the range hotel price for the city! But as soon as I walked into my generously sized Spa Retreat room, all my concerns were washed away. A million dollar view over the ocean and Narrawallee Beach, a huge spa bath and massive king size bed, CD, DVD players, deck overlooking the view and the infinity pool, underfloor heating in the bathroom, every guest amenity you could dream of, an excellent DVD, CD and book library, and I could just keep going! The last time I had been to Bannisters, was many years ago when it was still a run down old motel style facility. The new face of Bannisters Lodge couldn't be further from the one of old. The Rick Stein name is everywhere, but with that comes the expectation of quality and excellence, which is something this establishment is holding up brilliantly. An onsite spa (which I didn't try as it was cheaper in Milton), a Poolside Bar which serves informal dinners and pizzas under heaters, along with cocktails, the infamous Rick Stein restaurant and the incredible views all make this an experience to remember. I was actually disappointed to be travelling alone and not able to share this with anyone! When leaving, I looked around the room and thought, "this was sooooo worth it!"

This is an older-style motel that has been up-dated and modernised. The stunning views make it worth putting up with any short-comings, eg smaller rooms with not enough room for a sitting area. It was a get-together and 3 of us shared a spa-room. As they normally only have king-size beds in the spa rooms, they split the bed and added a roll-away bed. The roll-away bed was not really suitable for an adult. The room was not large enough to really accommodate 3 people. However, we were quite happy for one night and enjoyed the patio looking out to the ocean and could hear the waves breaking from our room as we went to sleep. It was rather expensive, but we enjoyed the facilities. It has a lovely pool bar area, and the pool itself is a spectacular infininity pool with the sea beyond. We had lunch at Rick Steins which also has a magnificent view across manicured lawn to the sea beyond. However the food and prices at the restaurant put us off a bit. The food was okay, the staff a little aloof, and the prices Sydney prices! Breakfast, which was included in our package, was served at the restaurant which had a lovely sunny balcony where we sat and enjoyed the plentiful array of breakfast choices.

Room Tip: The north side rooms would have a marginally better view with a sunny outlook, but most rooms have a...

What a great place to relax and be spoiled by good food. We stayed here at the end of our holiday as a stop off heading home from Melbourne. We had a room with a spa on the balcony taking in the amazing views.
Had a few cocktails at the pool bar and lunch when we checked in at 2. Had I think the best espresso martini I've ever had, the food was good as well.
We had dinner and breakfast at Rick Steins Restuarant and the food definitely lived up to the expectations.
All round this placd was great and we will definitely be back
Thank you

This is a tricky place to review. I had a very enjoyable time here but at this price point I can see certain criticisms. This review has to be taken in context, at $300 a night in low season I think I am allowed to be critical, even though I have given 20 dollar rooms in Asia 5 stars.

Upon entering the car park you can see this is just a tarted up motel. The walls of the rooms are paper thin, so much so we had to change rooms on our first night as the next door guests were playing their TV so loud. This was no problem as they had a spare room available. This actually turned out to be a bonus, as we were placed on the north side. We had sun all day long on our balcony, which was lovely in winter. I could see problems with this room in summer as it faces the pool and is above the bar. I read somewhere they have live music in the bar some evenings which would be really annoying if you wanted a quiet peaceful evening on your balcony. The rooms on the east side would be more quiet in summer.

The room was very nice but definitely not up to $300 standards, looking at my holiday pics it seems very average, but very clean. I must also say, the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Views were also great.

The staff were also very polite and efficient.

To sum up, it's a pretty nice place that I don't think is worth the money but as we wanted to dine at Rick Steins restaurant and not drive it was a matter of convenience.
