“Ok for base while touring South Coast, lower end of 3 star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2010

Had read some pretty bad reviews so was pleased to find Black Dolphin clean and convenient for stay. Staff were friendly, especially as we had meals in the dining room. Food great but far, far too much. Room very basic. No air con but an overhead fan which in some rooms was extremely noisy and had to be turned off to sleep. No lock on screen door so didn't like to leave it open at night. so hot and stuffy. TV reception lousy. As we were out most of the day with a fairly quiet group and kept similar hours, thin walls and noise not a great problem. Only mirror was in bathroom/toilet. Made for some "animated discussion" when trying to get out at same time!

Love Merimbula - loathe the Black Dolphin! I am not sure where to start - we just had such terrible stay.
The beds need replacing immediately. Both myself and my partner felt like we were sleeping in a water bed! Even the smallest of movements during the night were felt by the other.
The air- conditioning (seems like this might be the only difference between the standard and deluxe rooms) was so noisy that the luxury of any sleep was either taken away by the state of the bed or the noise of the air-conditioning. I am not over exaggerating here - it felt like you were sleeping next to a noisy old generator! So, neither of us slept at all well.
It is hard to describe the on-site manager other than saying that, technically, efficient enough however just had a ‘don’t really care' attitude. I would therefore rate customer service as poor.
The pool was OK (small) but the pool area itself is in need of a makeover and, I felt, not particularly inviting or well maintained. I think someone might have used incorrect chemicals that had caused discoloration on the bottom of the concrete pool surface. We did not use the spa as I - there were some broken tiles at the time.
Overall we were very disappointed and would never return - ever! I do note some positive reviews on this site. However, make sure you consider all reviews before booking. If we had of been able to get a good night’s sleep - even once- then I may have felt a little more positive. However, looking at review for other places around the same price I would not ever take the risk of booking Black Dolphin.

We stayed in merimbula in december and what a wonderfull place it was . The town is absolutetly beutifull right on the lake and the beach is spectacular . The black dolphin motel was our base . Overlooking the lake and the beach only behind the motel was fantastic . Early morning swim and at the pool in the afternoon . what can be better . The rooms were great and not to expensive considering the city prices . we where very pleased . Great garden area and afternoon drinks looking over the lake and the sunset. Highly recomend .

My husband and I were on ou babymoon. The location is fine, only a short walk to the main centre but we were "upgraded" to a deluxe suite. I would hate to have seen the standard rroms. Very basic faclities, little air conditioning, which was incrediably noisy so we couldn't have it on while sleeping. Parking was poor and our4WD had to be squeezed into a small car space with no other option but to leave it on the street otherwise. Only good thing - great shower.

I had never been to Merimbula before and booking in the peak Christmas period, I knew we were going to be up for a bit of cash! AS someone who prefers 4 star comfort, we went for the 3 and a half star Black Dolphin Hotel as we could get it at a reasonable price and really all we needed was a bed to sleep in!

It wasn't fancy or posh but it had everything we needed. We booked just a hotel room and it was fine. It was clean, tidy, roomy, a bit dated, but perfect for what we were after. The room had aircon and heating, there was a small but really nice pool on the property, parking outside your room, it was a 2 minute walk to a beautiful beach and a 10 minute walk into the heart of Merimbula. It was quiet, the staff were lovely and I really loved the whole stay at Merimbula.
We went on the dolphin cruise that was really great, except we didn't actually see any dolphins which was a real shame. You did get to see the lovely beaches and views of Merimbula though, just no dolphins!
It was the busiest time of year for the town and we didn't feel too crowded at all. You do have to book in advance if you want to go out for dinner.

We stayed for 10 days just after Christmas and will book again if possible for Christmas holidays 2010. My husband and l stayed in the suite not the motel and could not fault the room at all. You can only stay in the suites for a one week period at a time so agreed that we would transfer to the motel for the last three days, however the reception rang us on the last day of our stay to advise that we could have the room for the rest of our stay as the guests that had reserved the room were not arriving til later, which we were very happy about. The room is self contained so you have to make your own bed and keep the room clean which was not a problem. The breakfast in the dining room was excellent and good menu choices.

The location of this hotel is perfect with access to Merimbula's main beach only a 5 minute walk.
The room was of a very poor standard with the shower screen broken and unable to close correctly and the carpet was so old that the smell was like old footy socks due to the dankness of it's condition. This was most unpleasant and we did manage to put up with it for 2 nights. We spent most of the day away from the room at the beach or lake with a 14 month old baby. The reception on the television was poor however this gave us more encouragement to get out of the room.
Considering we spent the same amount of money at another motor lodge in Merimbula only one week before, we were very disappointed and we do not recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to spend time in Merimbula as there are a number of alternatives available at a higher standard.
On a positive note we can recommend the local RSL club for dinner. The menu is extensive and cater for all needs including gluten free. A child minding facility is available however the restaurant most competently accommodates children of all ages.

  • Liked — Loaction to beaches and lake as well as local shops.
  • Disliked — The room, size of it, shower facilities, condition of carpet and lack of character of room.
