“Great location- has potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013 via mobile

A magnificent building completed around 1918, it originally housed engineers and managers building the irrigation scheme. In an age where we are all looking for something different, and prepared to pay for it, the Hydro offers ambience and nostalgia. It needs a lot of money spent on its refurbishment that isn't being spent and my observation of management is that it is slack and unmotivated.

The gardens have great potential at low cost to allure visitors but are scruffy. The shire council has done a great job in beautifying the township. Management at the Hydo should pull its weight. Tourists will come and spend money - especially the aby boomers.

The large murals painted on the bar wall is very much worth a visit. They depict scenes from Leeton's history.

Dear Hedonist,

Thankyou for your review. Whilst the Hydro requires much more work completed in the gardens and other areas, much has been done in the period of this management's tenancy.
I can assure you we are very committed to the process. I encourage you to return into the future and follow our progress, perhaps you could provide some helpful insight into your gardening ideas.

Anthony Boots, Business Owner and General Manager.

We stayed here for 2 nights as did a few other family members for a function in Leeton. The room was comfortable, clean and value for money. Staff were courteous, helpful and friendly with a smile. The building is very interesting taking you back in time with its antique pieces and old charm. It is however in need of a little bit of attention, but realising it is over 100 years old. But it did look like some rooms were getting fitted out. I would recommend and will stay again next time in Leeton.

The Hydro was built in the 1920s to house "officers" involved in building the extensive irrigation works in and around the Leeton district. With Head Office just across the road (a beautiful art deco building) it must have been very convenient and comfortable environment for these elite public servants. Its an incongruous building in that its grandeur and scale contrasts heavily with the otherwise unpretentious Leeton township. For the visitor it is a trip back to another time with many of the original architectural features preserved including the sweeping gardens, 4 metre wide verandas, high ceilings, art deco lighting and leather chairs. The current owners are doing a fine job of rejuvenating this grand old lady but don't expect 4 star standards. Do expect great value for money and a trip back in time.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 3. Much larger than a traditional hotel room and newly renovated. Opens onto the...

I stayed her for one night last week, in room 24. The historic building is very interesting. The bar is quite intimate and friendly, as are the staff. The complimentary breakfast is very simple but also very appreciated.

My room was not so great - but I do note that my colleague's room was very nice, and looking at the website it seems most of the other rooms are quite nice too; I expect that my room was just one they have not gotten around to renovating yet. And I think they did have a full house on the night I stayed, so this may not be the first room they usually let. The bed was very uncomfortable and I ended up sleeping on the floor. There were no bedside lamps. The bathroom was very basic.

I don't expect five star luxury in an old country hotel such as this, particularly when the rates are very reasonable indeed, but I really would consider at least replacing that bed. And maybe adding in a couple of cheap bedside lamps as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room

Stayed here for three nights for business.
Although an old hotel and need of some work, good value for money and good bar menu food.

I grew up in Leeton, but whenever I visit the Hydro (as it's known locally) I am always awestruck by the grandeur and the old world charm and how it's managed to remain around for so long. A little rough around the edges, but a gorgeous gem nonetheless.

A beautiful old hotel very grand but a little bit tired around the edges. The room we had was clean and comfortable, it looked like it had been recently renovated. The lobby and corridors of the hotel looked a bit worn and tired, it appears the owners are in the process of fixing this wonderful old building up. Having said that I would certainly stay here again.
