We wanted to try B&B in Oz even though they are a little pricey. We picked the right one to try, Gavin and Lucie make you feel very welcome, the rooms are just lovely, very clean and spacious. The extra little things make all the difference like the docking station, beach towels if you need them, sweets in the fridge. Gavin cooks a mean breakfast too.

My wife and I stayed just one night at Ruskin House and we cannot speak too highly of the place, or of its owners, Gavin and Lucie.
Our room was clean, comfortable and cozy and tastefully furnished. Everything worked (including the iPod/iPhone docking station by the bed)
We had an early start the next morning and Gavin woke up especially early to serve us an excellent hot cooked breakfast to get us going on the next leg of our journey.
We have already booked our next stay in December 2012!

My wife and I recently enjoyed our second stay at Ruskin House and I'm happy to say it was just as enjoyable as the first. We stayed in the 'blue room' (Queen spa en suite) which was clean, light and airy. The bed was comfortable, the spa bath large enough for two and Gavin and Lucie remain the most accommodating of hosts. Our biggest surprise was the breakfast. Not only was it one of the best we've ever tasted, it was also one of the largest! Save plenty of room and skip the brunch plans because this is easily one of the best breakfasts in Byron.

Our first stay in January 2012 was in the Deluxe Spa Room and proved so enjoyable we knew we had to come back. We couldn't recommend Ruskin House highly enough. In an age of mediocre service, this place is an absolute gem.

The young couple who run Ruskin House do a fabulous job making you feel comfortable & welcome. Little extras like sweet treats in the fridge & a variety of teas including herbals made our stay most enjoyable. We've stayed before & will stay again

Gavin & Lucie are great hosts. Nothing is too much trouble.

The location is very good.

We stayed in the twin room. Gavin offered us an upgrade (free of charge) to a suite, but we like twin beds so we stuck with it ...

The twin room is quite small and dark. It has 1 window. It's not the kind of room you'd want to spend too much time in, although its adequate for a few days. The beds were VERY comfortable.

The breakfasts are absolutely outstanding and incredible value. $10 for a generous large (and healthy) continental breakfast OR $15 for the "full house" - Continental PLUS a hot dish. All very beautifully prepared, and very very generous.

A very comfortable and homely place to stay ...

Room Tip: The twin room should NOT be your first choice.

This little B & B is located a short drive away from the shopping streets of Byron Bay. Free parking was available at the front of the house and we were greeted by Miro who was very friendly and hospitable to us throughout the 3 days 2 night stay. We were early but he let us check in to the room despite that the room was not fully ready as we didn't mind. We were grateful that he was flexible in that manner as we wanted to just drop things off and go out and about.

ROOM
We had Room #1 which was the Oriental room. It was cosy and carpeted. There was an air-con/heater which was important to us and good. There was ample space to move about and there was also a decent sized flat screen TV there. A small dining table at the side of the room and access to the garden area outside if you'd like to sit out and have a drink of wine. There was also a leather couch beside the bed which we used to put our bags and stuff. There was also a fan overhead.

BED
The bed was a double bed and was fairly comfortable. The pillows were a little too soft though and could be improved but otherwise it was clean and good for a night's sleep.

BATHROOM
The bathroom had a separate toilet on one end and a nice 2-seater jacuzzi on the other end. The jacuzzi was the highlight of this room and you could really enjoy a nice soak in there after a long walk outside. The shower at the jacuzzi was also very good with strong water pressure and really refreshing. The sink was complete with a big mirror, basic soap, shampoo, essentials which was a nice surprise.

EXTRAS
There is a microwave, small fridge and electric kettle to make a drink. Also available were sachets of instant coffee and tea for you to make in the room. There were also simple cutlery and plates provided in the room, just in case you want to dine in. We were grateful for those supplies as we did make breakfast in the room on our last day there.

BREAKFAST
We took up the Tripadvisor Free Breakfast coupon for this hotel and had 1 free breakfast (full cooked) on our first morning. We had ham, eggs and toast for the mains and was also given a nice fruit platter as an appetizer. Coffee or tea was available along with a glass of juice. There was also a round of yoghurt and muesli to go with your breakfast. The breakfast was very filling and good and well balanced.

LOCATION
The B & B is not extremely close to the beach, as I had intially thought. It was a distance away but manageable considering that I did not find another B & B close by. I believe there were some accommodations nearer to the beach and shopping but those would be way higher in rates. If you drive, this is a good B & B for you but if you don't, some reviews have mentioned it is a 10 min walk. Byron Bay isn't that fabulous if you don't drive. You need to drive around to really see the other places there.

We also discovered a cheap eating place just directly opposite this B & B. It is some kind of entertainment centre but the restaurant there had cheap food (probably the cheapest in Byron Bay!) and there were daily specials. We had a roasted chicken thing to go and brought back to our B & B to eat. I'd recommend getting a bottle of wine to go with your take-home meal.

Room Tip: Room #1 has a nice jacuzzi and good size room. Not sure about the others but I was happy with my roo...

I had a lovely stay at Ruskin House recently. The location is great because it is a 10 minute walk to the shops and beaches, so you are close to everything but you can also enjoy peace and quiet when you get back. Gavin and Lucie are friendly and welcoming hosts. Our room was clean and modern with all the comforts of home. There is free WiFi (signal was a bit temperamental in our room at the back, but Gavin is on to it). We also enjoyed a delicious breakfast as part of a special offer (but can be purchased at a very reasonable price). The rooms open on to a sunny, leafy courtyard. Perfect!
