“Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2008

We stayed at Aquarius for 3 nights and were really impressed with the location, 5 mins to shops, bars and the beach.

The rooms were clean, but we were a bit disappointed we had our own room which we paid extra for but it was off an 8 bed dorm which all shared a bathroom.....so there was always a wait, Overall it wasnt bad though.

The reception staff werent as friendly as i expected, things just seemed a bit toio much hassle for them. But having been at wake up! in sydney where nothing is too much trouble and the staff just chat to you all the time maybe i expected too much. The kitchen was not that great only four rings to cook on so was very busy at mealtimes, also not enough crockery or cutlery. Apparently they are doing a new kitchen as part of there rennovations so maybe they realise that its a problem.

Overall I would stay here again but only for its location to everything.

I stayed at this backpackers with my girlfriend for a week. It was right in the heart of Byron Bay.

If you walk out the front you are no less than a couple of streets from the beach/restaurants/beachy hotel or any other pubs.

At first it was just a last minute thing so we had no real expectations and we both hadnt stayed in a backpackers before...

When we arrived we were a bit like "what...." but its a backpackers.
If you like your privacy (which we did) make sure you get a private room not a shared dorm. The bathrooms were a bit feral but we just laughed it off because we were in Byron Bay one of the best places on Earth.

You are stumbling distance from the Beachy, right down the road from the best Seafood place and near all the shops and action of the main strip.

The rooms are small but you're on holidays and the amount of time you actually spent in them compared to outside was a big difference.

The staff weren't really a big part of our stay and we didn't really interact with them.
If you are going to stay here make sure you realise that its a backpackers not a 5 star resort so don't arrive thinking you are Donald Trump. If you go with this type of mentality you will most likely hate it.

But if you go knowing you're on a budget and you want to spend most of your days outside, at the beach, walking to the lighthouse, drinking.... you will love it! You are in Byron Bay!

I probably won't stay there again, no offence to the hostel but I am more of a luxury kind of traveller but this is all in the fun of travelling by yourself and booking accom without having been there before.

i have just returned from byron bay.
after a hellish first night at the bunkhouse backpackers, we relocated to aquarius and were pleasantly surprised. our room was a two level, 8 person room. the room has its own bathroom, with shower, toilet and basin. (much better than the usual communal type bathroom at other hostels). the room also had its own bar fridge and sink. other facilities at the hostel were adequate. the kitchen a bit messy, but did the job. the pool was clean, there is a laundry with washers and dryers. a bar that opens at 5 and plays the simpsons, with 2 beers for 5 bucks.
didnt have much to do with the staff, but had no issues with them when i did have to deal with them.\
the location is pretty good, close to the beach and main shops on jonson st.
it is a bit more expensive than other hostels, but the extra couple of dollars a night is worth it.
overall i'd recommend the aquarius.

We arrived at Bryon Bay after a hellish 12 hour bus ride from Sydney and found this hostel at the last minute.

Kitchen area was always a bit of a mess and there were a number of flies around the eating area.

We enjoyed the "cheap beer/simpsons" hour, where you could buy beer on special and watch two episodes of the simpsons in the dining area with everyone at the hostel.

The hostel location wasn't close to the beach, but wasn't too far either.

There is NO air conditioning of any sort at this hostel.

Awful place. Staff RUDEST people we've ever met.

It needs a clean, the rooms and kitchen were filthy.

Lonely Planet's recommendation is way out of date, don't stay here - there are lots of much nicer places in Byron at a fraction of the price.
