I spent in Arts Factory 3 nights in the Love Shack and it was disgusting...very dirty everywhere especially in the kitchen...I would call it "animal" factory. You must pay for everything, I found ridiculous to pay 2 dollars all the time you want a fresh towel. Internet is very expensive as it is all over Australia. It is not very close to Byron Bay town and the smelly shuttle was useless...in Byron you can find better and better accommodation.. maybe a bit more expensive but not so dirty for sure

After hearing multiple people rave about Arts Factory as I traveled through Australia, I booked three nights here. From the moment my friend and I arrived, I was ready to leave. Yes, there's live music -- at the bar across the parking lot. I was expecting more activities, concerts and attractions. Instead, there was a one-night talent show (that was fantastic) and one art class offered a day.

We stayed in the Lakeside Cottage, which had cockroaches everywhere. During a rainy day when it wasn't possible to go the beach, there was absolutely nothing to do at the hostel. No classes, no entertainment, not even a proper lounge area. This was the most expensive place I stayed at during two months Down Under and it was, by far, the worst. There are plenty of places to choose from in Byron Bay. Don't stay at Arts Factory.

If you decide to stop over in Byron Bay this is most def the hostel I would recomend. They have different typ of housings and you are best of booking ahead since it's a popular place to stay. It's about 10 min walk from city centre and they have little mini shuttle busses running for when you arrive and even if you're out late at night. Probably the coolest place in Byron Bay to stay at.

My fiance and I stayed at The Arts Factory Lodge during a backpacking trip though Australia. Here are the basics:
The restrooms were nice and clean. The upstairs womens restroom had bigger showers, and better water pressure. It was always less crowded than the first floor restroom.
We stayed in a private 2 person room on the first floor. It was very small and VERY loud (the entire hostel stayed pretty loud all the time, so bring ear plugs!). Although the rules were not to bring food or alcohol back to the Lodge, our room had a mini-fridge and the staff would often take guests on "beer runs!"
We ate breakfast at the Lodge a few times, and it was very delicious. We also kept leftovers in our mini-fridge, and snacks and beer in our room (the staff could care less!). The Lodge also plans group activities that change from week to week. We did not have time to do any of these, but they seemed fun and a great way to get to know fellow travelers.
The Lodge is located in the back of a neighborhood off the main street in Byron Bay. It was a good location, about a 10 minute walk into town. To keep the neighbors happy, the staff would run a shuttle from 11:00pm until 6:00am every 15 minutes from town back to the Lodge. At least this is what we were told. We never rode (or saw) the shuttle the whole time we were there!
The Arts Factory Lodge is a very unique and fun hostel, with a wonderful staff! We didn't want to leave it, or Byron Bay for that matter!!

This place is so unique that you just have to go there and experience it for yourself!

From the Indian TeePee Dorms to the London Bus, the place has something for everyone. The evenings came alive with imprompture gigs on the stage over looking the billabong. There was a mix of backpackers and hippies with everyone getting into the groove.

The bush tucker walk was great! The guy is probably crazy but knows everything about the Aussie bush and has a great sense of humour! Pissed myself laughing the whole time.

Go to the Arts Factory & you will not be disapointed.

Stayed in a 6 bed dorm as that was all that was available, so was sharing with males and females! It was an ok dorm, with very large lockers to store your rucksack. (Make sure you take a padlock to lock your locker as they dont provide them) The bedding was clean enough but the whole place is alittle run down. Was full of REAL travellers who had been there for months! Reminded me of the village they built themselves on the film 'The Beach'!!! Staff very helpful. Location good, although it was around a 10 min walk to the beach/town on quite a dark road, but the hostel provides a free shuttle run back and forth hourly. Bathrooms ok, but not the cleanest! Lots of noise at night as there is a pool in the middle of the place and most of the rooms are set around the pool so people tend to hang around there at night, although it was absolutly filthy! Had a good bar on site and a cinema too showing up to date films. Dont think i would stay here again as it was quite expensive for what you get, but was a great experience of roughing it in Oz!
