“Atmosphere and buzz is well worth a visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

I did the standard hostel hopping from Cairns to Sydney on a Greyhound, and even now 2-3 years later the Arts Factory was the most memorable of all of the hostels. You might be able to find a bit cheaper in Byron Bay - and the Arts Factory isn't central to the town - however, the sense of community in this place was great.

There was a series of arranged entertainment - when I was there, there was a talent show on, the whole hostel crowded into a room to listen to a guy playing a selection of worldly instruments. I travelled alone at this point but I was surrounded by new friends - from either previous hostels whose itinerary wasn't too dissimilar to mine or by meeting them in and around the hostel.

I stayed in an 8 bedroom, it was clean and I had no problems sleeping there - despite being 1 girl with 7 blokes! Toilets weren't too far away and they were also fine, I had to change there a couple of times - and they were alright.

There's hammocks and table tennis and loads of reptiles just walking about outside - a true experience of Byron.

From The Arts Factory the happy tours regularly drop by to take you to Nimbin which you've got to check out.

We stayed in the teepee which was a different experience but was very cold at night, there is a nice log fire inside but staff would not light it until 9.00 pm despite us sitting in there at 7pm after long travels. I would stay there again but in spring time when the weather was a little Warner but not too hot.

Dear Emma,

I am glad you enjoyed your experience. It can be cold in winter, many people think our climate is hot all year! From September to November and March to May in Byron Bay is perfect weather, very warm, less rain - and also less crowds. So I recomment thes months as ideal times to visit. We only light the teepee fire at 9pm because we have the fire in the common area going until 10pm. We try to manager how much wood we use, as it is a very precious reesouce! Happy travel, and we look forward to your return sometime.

Stayed only one night at this hostel, we were in a campervan and the parking was very busy. there was a good atmosphere and a huge party was taking place in the bar which was very loud but didnt go on all night.

The bathroom block was dated and was quite a walk from the campervan parking area. The price of the hostel was good for Byron Bay and the location wasnt bad either.

The staff were friendly and the communal facilities were good.

We (couple in our 20s) stayed at the Arts Factory for two nights..

Good
- Very chilled atmosphere. It has a pool and a big communal area with guitars to play, a pool table and a beach volleyball court. Plus there's a lake right next to it with hammocks, very nice.
- It has a little coffee shop and cafe with very cheap food for a meal
- Free shuttle to the centre of Byron

Bad
- The rooms aren't too great. Very basic and they don't have electrical sockets...!! So you have to crowd around the ones in the communal areas
- Location isn't ideal, it's about a 10-15min walk to the centre

It's cheaper than staying in the centre of Byron Bay, and it has some real character, so I'd definitely recommend at least one night here!

Room Tip: Try to pick one that faces away from the pool, otherwise it's VERY loud

One of my favorite hostels so far. Wish I could stay longer! They're located just outside of town (10 minutes walking distance) but there's a free shuttle that runs pretty much every hour. They have cheap food (lunch and dinners for $6) and yoga classes by donation. There is a lovely pond and hammocks and even teepees. I stayed in a regular 4-bed dorm and loved it. The kitchen and outdoor seating overlooks the pool. There is a cinema and brewery nearby. And it's just a short walk to the beach. I didn't want to leave!

Dear Erica,
I am so glad you enjoyed your experience at the Arts Factory and you found it a retreat! We do aim to offer an alternative to the hustle of many backpacker hostels, with workshops such as yoga. Happy travels, we hope to see you again some day - the Arts Factory team :-)

The owners were very nice, the ambiance was funky. The room "cube" was small, the bed pretty bad. There was no window above the door, so there was too much noise. The bathroom was ok.
There wasn't enough dishes to cook in the kitchen.

Dear Lily,

Thanks for your feedback, i am glad you found the managers friendly and thee ambience funky. I will have a look at noise levels with the staff, especailly at night, as we may be able to reduce the noise if it is too loud, as you mentioned. I will also make sure we are checking the kitchen for equipment more frequently, we do try to keep on top of this, but you wouldn't believe how quickly it goes missing! I will also askt he housekeeping team to monitor bathrooms so we can lift them from being okay to being good! May travels be safe and happy!

Have stayed here twice and the rooms are quite good for the price, clean and comfortable! Fun but not luxurious!
The restaurant is lovely and have been dozens of times! Great entertainment and amazing food for good value! They even have a cinema! And with cow skin lying down couches!!
