“Just do it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

Worth every step - even my 9 year old did it & was glad once her got to the top! There is a steep bit that's a bit painful but worth the leg pain as the most easterly lookout is superb!

“Some basic info about the walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is a lovely walk; as long as you're not one who only thinks a 'lovely walk' is one with no trace of human activity and minimal other walkers.
You can pick-up the track at a number of locations. All together its about 3km if you go all the way from the town centre, along the beach or footpath to The Pass, and then onwards from there. Otherwise you can park towards the end of the main beach or at The Pass (paid parking), or further along at Wategos Beach (free parking, if you can find a place, which may be unlikely if the surf is up). You could also park at the lighthouse and walk backwards (also paid parking).
It is worthwhile including the section between the Pass and Wategos in your walk as this passes though a lovely section of littoral rainforest (there is also a small loop walk in the rainforest at The Pass).
The track has some ups and downs, particularly the final ascent/descent to the lighthouse, which is quite a long, steep climb. This may eliminate some of the less sure walkers, especially on a hot day. The track surface is hardened and smooth the whole way though there are some stairs. There is a small detour you can do near the end too, that takes you down to the little beach and rocks below the lighthouse, a good spot for snorkelling in the right conditions.
You should take water, sunscreen and a hat. Most of the walk is pretty exposed. If it's raining or blowing a strong northerly or easterly you should also be prepared for the worst!
It would also be worth taking binoculars, particularly if it's a still day, and you can often see turtles, rays and sharks from the track. Dolphins and whales can also be seen sometimes (the whales mostly in the winter months).
You can get food and drinks at the cafe at the lighthouse and at the pass, and sometimes there is a food van by the beach at Wategos. There are toilets at the Pass, the western (city) end of Wategos and the lighthouse. There is also a small museum at the lightkeepers cottage, by the lighthouse. For more info about the lighthouse, this site is good: http://www.lighthouse.net.au/lights/nsw/Cape%20Byron/Cape%20Byron.htm
You can spend as long as you like but I'd say allow a minimum of 2 hours if you go the whole way, or an hour if you go from Wategos. It's worth considering taking your swimming gear for a cool off at Wategos or little Wategos, but be aware that the surf and rips can be strong at these two beaches if the surf is up.
Time? Anytime but morning could be best.

“Wonderful Trail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

This trail has wonderful scenery. Be prepare to see awesome shades of blue/green of the see.

If it is a hot day, make sure to have sun protetor and plenty of water. The view is worth the effort :)

More likely you will spot dolphins and stingrays (or i was too lucky to see them).
Apparently, in winter you can also spot whales.

Once you reach the lighthouse, facilities available are: toilet, water and cafe. I tried the iced-coffee from the cafe and it was delicious ... enjoying the view :)

Highly recommended!
Dont forget your photo camera!!!!

“An enjoyable walk, even on the windiest day!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

I loved this little walk from the end of Byron beach, stopping to walk up to the lookout, continuing along the trail, past the little beach and up the hill towards the lighthouse.

Make sure you stop for a drink or ice cream at the cafe by the lighthouse.
