I haven't actually stayed here but it wasn't from lack of trying. Last week I rang up to book a unit for myself and husband for mid-August. I saw the winter special which said $90 for one bed & $110 for 2 bed but missed the fine print which stated 5 nights minimum. I wanted 4 nights so rang up and spoke to Sally, who seems, every time I have spoken to her to be either surly, distracted or vague. She told me in an irritated voice that the special only applied for 5 nights but accepted my booking for 4 nights in the last unit available, a ground floor 2 bedder at $110 a night, and took my credit card details. I was a little uneasy at the grumpy attitude, so was my husband when I told him, why stay anywhere if there is a chance of unpleasantness?
Got a phone call today from Sally who said she couldn't remember what dates I was coming, I told her the dates and she stated that she had double booked and offered the unit to someone else. I said what does that mean and she stated that we were first and she would cancel the other people, I said OK then and that was that!
She rang back 5 minutes later sounding vague or annoyed or both and rambled on about not charging enough and that the unit should be $160 a night. I said that over 4 nights at $50 a night it would be more than the cost of the extra night and didn't make sense, she seemed surprised at this fact and momentarily confused. She then said I could have it at $137.50! I told her that I was happy at the price she had accepted the booking at ($110) but could understand that the other people she had booked after me were probably paying more. This seemed to horrify her and she said oh no no no!
I told her to forget it and we will find somewhere else to stay, which she thought was a good idea. No doubt she can make more off the other booking. Things anyway would have been too unpleasant even had she honored our original booking. I've heard of being gazumped when buying property but never, ever, when booking accommodation!
We are retired professional people who are world travelers and have stayed in 5 and 6 star hotels as well as a few 4 star 'mistakes' but we have never had a booking cancelled because a better offer came along. This has been the most unprofessional example of hospitality bad manners and dodgy business behaviour we have ever come across.
I'm still a little shocked by all this as it has never happened before and find the whole episode not only bizarre but downright dishonest. It seems to me that a contract was formed when she took my booking AND credit card details. The two phone calls were obviously a successful attempt to manipulate me into breaking this contract.
If you decide to stay here, good luck! Should you make a booking make sure you demand an immediate email confirmation at the agreed price OR don't bother, stay somewhere else.
I am now looking for a place to stay in Byron where my custom is welcomed and not met with ill tempered underhand tactics.
I will duly report on trip advisor when I have found new accommodation and, hopefully, enjoyed my stay.
