My wife and I stayed at Baystay based purely on the recommendations here on Tripadvisor but we have come away with a distinctly different impression of the place. As such, I wanted to try and explain why we don't feel the reviews are representative of our experience.
We stayed in the room with the jacuzzi. We had paid quite a bit more for the privilege (our room rate was AU$195) and we were looking forward to being able to use the bath. Overall, what we found was some tired accommodation - the furniture was worn, the main (patio-style) door was basic and the lock didn't feel too secure plus the bathroom itself felt a little bit grubby.
The jacuzzi bath is encased by a lean-to conservatory. In theory this is a nice feature but in practice the conservatory (and therefore the bath) are overlooked from a window above, which we found slightly odd. The windows are also surrounded by a thin layer of bushes and by neighbouring accommodation, and have therefore been roughly painted over to stop anyone outside from seeing in. However, there are gaps in the strange paintwork and people can still see in. (While we don't consider ourselves prudish, we found this all a bit untidy and less than appealing.)
During our stay the hosts were out of town for two of the three days. One of these days was planned and the other was an unfortunate overnight delay to their return flight. While they were out of town they kindly provided us with vouchers to visit the local breakfast café, which was around the corner and served great breakfast foods. On the final day, the hosts returned and we were invited to breakfast on the balcony. However, we weren’t treated to anything like the breakfast we had heard so much about in the reviews. Obviously I understand that the hosts had been delayed and had their own issues to sort out but we still felt let down by a breakfast that was nothing like what is so poetically described on the website.
The location of Baystay is very good – it’s not on (or off) the main drag but it’s only a ten-minute walk away. It’s also really well-placed for the beach and the rest of the amenities in town. The hosts are also very nice, they communicated clearly and they were apologetic about their late return. We did however feel a little as though we were intruding in their house – almost as if we were imposing – which is not what we’ve felt in the better B&Bs we’ve stayed in both in Australia and elsewhere.
On the whole, this was by no means a bad stay but our experience was far different to most of the others listed here. If you’re searching for a place to stay that is a step up from a hostel then Baystay may well be a good choice but in terms of value for money we feel there is probably better to be had elsewhere.
Finally, I didn’t want to write a review using unqualified terms like ‘grubby’ and ‘tired’ without being able to show what I mean. I’ve therefore attached a few photos to serve as examples.
