“Not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

My wife and I stayed at Baystay based purely on the recommendations here on Tripadvisor but we have come away with a distinctly different impression of the place. As such, I wanted to try and explain why we don't feel the reviews are representative of our experience.

We stayed in the room with the jacuzzi. We had paid quite a bit more for the privilege (our room rate was AU$195) and we were looking forward to being able to use the bath. Overall, what we found was some tired accommodation - the furniture was worn, the main (patio-style) door was basic and the lock didn't feel too secure plus the bathroom itself felt a little bit grubby.

The jacuzzi bath is encased by a lean-to conservatory. In theory this is a nice feature but in practice the conservatory (and therefore the bath) are overlooked from a window above, which we found slightly odd. The windows are also surrounded by a thin layer of bushes and by neighbouring accommodation, and have therefore been roughly painted over to stop anyone outside from seeing in. However, there are gaps in the strange paintwork and people can still see in. (While we don't consider ourselves prudish, we found this all a bit untidy and less than appealing.)

During our stay the hosts were out of town for two of the three days. One of these days was planned and the other was an unfortunate overnight delay to their return flight. While they were out of town they kindly provided us with vouchers to visit the local breakfast café, which was around the corner and served great breakfast foods. On the final day, the hosts returned and we were invited to breakfast on the balcony. However, we weren’t treated to anything like the breakfast we had heard so much about in the reviews. Obviously I understand that the hosts had been delayed and had their own issues to sort out but we still felt let down by a breakfast that was nothing like what is so poetically described on the website.

The location of Baystay is very good – it’s not on (or off) the main drag but it’s only a ten-minute walk away. It’s also really well-placed for the beach and the rest of the amenities in town. The hosts are also very nice, they communicated clearly and they were apologetic about their late return. We did however feel a little as though we were intruding in their house – almost as if we were imposing – which is not what we’ve felt in the better B&Bs we’ve stayed in both in Australia and elsewhere.

On the whole, this was by no means a bad stay but our experience was far different to most of the others listed here. If you’re searching for a place to stay that is a step up from a hostel then Baystay may well be a good choice but in terms of value for money we feel there is probably better to be had elsewhere.

Finally, I didn’t want to write a review using unqualified terms like ‘grubby’ and ‘tired’ without being able to show what I mean. I’ve therefore attached a few photos to serve as examples.

Baystay, Manager at Baystay Bed & Breakfast, responded to this review, July 9, 2011
In response to the review "not great" the room rate quoted was incorrect. The guest paid $140 per night not $195. We are budget accommodation and never charge that rate for the Spa Suite. We have taken on board the reviewers comment regarding the glass looking "tired" and have replaced the glass enclosing the spa with lovely frosted glass which gives privacy. A photo has been added to our gallery. Similarly the shower screen glass has also been replaced with sparkling new glass. With reference to the comments about breakfast, this guest was provided the same home made continental breakfast that all our other reviewers rave about. We are sorry his experience was seemingly not what he was expecting. We do everything we can to make our guests feel at home and welcome and this is evidenced by other reviews.

What a great find Baystay is. A short stroll to all that Byron offers but far enough away from revellers, we enjoyed peaceful slumbers to be awakened by the musical chortling of magpies in the tropical gardens that surround this lovely B & B. A superb breakfast on the upstairs deck, seemingly set amongst the tree tops, consisted of numerous cereals, fresh fruit, preserves, fresh home baked bread and muffin sized frittatas straight from the oven. Fresh brewed coffee, juices and teas of every description (the lemon myrtle was terrific) finished off the feast and well and truly set us up for the day. Add perfect hosts and this place is a real winner and left us wishing we were staying longer than just overnight!

We stayed two nights in the Cape Byron YHA before staying here for two nights and the difference was like night and day! The Baystay is the nicest place we have stayed during our travels down the coast of Australia and for a very good price, too.

John and Jane are excellent hosts and made us feel very at ease in their beautiful accommodation.

The breakfast they serve you in the morning is healthy and delicious.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and the Baystay is just a five minute walk to the action.

The free WiFi is not advertised on their website but was something which we found very handy.

If we come back to Byron Bay, we will definitely stay here again.

John & Jane are absolutely fabulous people, friendly and polite. My room, with jacuzzi and sauna, was delightful. You're probably 1km or less away from the rumble of Byron, so you sleep perfectly.
This is the place to stay!

Baystay was the perfect place for my wife and I to stay during our time in Byron Bay. John was the most gracious host (as was his son Luke and his wife Jane) and did all he could to make our time at his home most enjoyable (including helping me to fix a broken part of my rental car that would have ended up costing me lots of extra money!!!). Baystay is located in an ideal spot....minutes from town, parks and the beach. They have 2 bikes for guests to use and loads of information about local daytrips and area attractions. If you are looking for a comfortable, safe, clean, relaxing and eco-minded environment to spend your holiday...call John and do all you can to add Baystay to your list!

What a great find this was....... Lovely owner, layed back made us feel right at home but giving us 100% privacy at the same time. Room clean and had all we needed. We had the spa room which was gorgeous. Spa set in bathroom surrounded by glass windows and tropical plants-also a sauna!
Outdoor settlings dated and dosnt feel that private, but everything inside is all you need. Great location, far enough away from teh hustle and bustle of the main strip but so close to beach-lovely walk.
The home-cooked breakfasts vary each day. The owner bakes his own muffins and breads and here is a selection of fresh fruits and cereals, tea, coffee and juices. HE is a fanstastic cook, really yummy. Nice relaxed way to start the day on the terrace!
Recommended for sure!

Found this place on the net and it was understated by a long way. We were given a room with a personal spa and sauna for less than $100 per night. Seems you have to pick this room if you want it and we got a good deal. Breakfasts were great and filling. The atmosphere of the place was great. To top it all off the owner took me on a glider flight over Byron Bay. What can I say?
The best 3 days in Byron.
