“Abysmal Arcadia”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We've stayed here many times, but after this last time we won't be returning. Standards have slipped. Badly. My white bath towel was stained with someone's hair dye. At least two lightbulbs were out, the TV didn't work, and the linen smelt musty. I won't go on. I'm not a fussy person but when you're paying just under $200 a night, you expect something better than this. A great pity because the house has character, potential and a fantastic location. You can walk to everything. But you have to wonder if the previous reviewer, who gave Acadia five stars, was in the same house.

My partner and I are staying at the guest house for 4 nights in the bohemian room. The manager, Diane, apologised as soon as we walked in. She had just taken over the management of the guesthouse that week, and she was discovering a whole range of issues that needed attention. We found her very accommodating and personable.
The bohemian room is very spacious room with a queen size bed (mattress is a bit hard) and a day bed. The bathroom is a part of the room, slightly sectioned off with a free standing bath tub. There is no where to put your toiletries or hang your towels, which is a bit impractical.
In the room there are two door ways leading into the adjacent rooms which would be good for group bookings. However it also causes noise to travel between the rooms and reduces the level of privacy. Any guests can hear your movements.
The yard and veranda are a lovely place to hang out. The bikes that are free to use, are very basic and a bit wonky.
Nevertheless, we are having a very pleasant stay. It's a lovely old federation style house on the quiet side of Byron but still walking distance from the heart of Byron.
It will be interesting to see what the new management will do with the place as it has heaps of potential. I am hopeful that it will improve.

I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit to this quaint, old world charm guesthouse and am pleased the new manager Diane, who has just taken over is so keen to keep this little gem affordable and get it back to the great quality establishment she envisions so passionately. Taking over a new establishment is never easy, you were very gracious under pressure. It was a pleasure to meet you Diane and thankyou for looking after us so well, it is great to feel so personally cared for. I love so many things about this property in a quiet part of Byron. The spacious, and colourful high ceiling rooms are a welcome change from the sometimes sterile accommodation of newer buildings and it is easy to feel at home in the bohemian setting. Every room is quirky and cosy,, just my style. I lived in a similar house when I was younger, I wish there were more of them. Looking forward to seeing you again Diane when you have imbued your own excellent quality and lovely personality into this delightful guesthouse. Thankyou again
