“Torpys Eco? Motel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Torpys Motel is at the end of the road of Braidwood, a former goldrush town. It comprises a main house with a few rooms and a row of about 6 cabins. All about you there is feeling of rustic neglect which has certain charm. The cabins are clean and the beds comfortable but much of the interior has created by the DIY skills of the owner, Andy. He is a cheerful chap who can trap you for a ages with his life history beginning in England. There is little evidence of an eco friendly energy management plan such as solar panels, high u value insulation or recycling grey water but he has constructed most of the place with sustainable timber..
The local politics are a mystery as he refuses to recommend the excellent restaurant next door and directs you to the diabolical cuisine of the Servicemens Club. Do go to Torpeas diner next door to Torpys and enjoy a first class menu and very convivial atmosphere.

An excellant experience. We arrived in the town reasonably late on a very cold evening last week and one of the locals recommended the ecomotel. From the start to the end of our stay we very well looked after. It was so nice to enter into a warm, cosy sympathy lit room. After a good nights sleep on a very comfortable bed we pulled back the curtains to find some pleasant views of the countryside. The room was immaculate and contained several new quality products as standard. The owners have thought of just about everything to make their customers happy using some technologies one would only find in 5 star city hotels! I love the ECO friendly aspect and have learnt alot about reducing my impact on the environmental (and impact on my husbands wallet!) And what a bonus not having any ice to scrape away from the windscreens with the under cover parking. We will return soon. Many thanks.

Room Tip: Ask about an 'ECO DEAL' and save money!

Andy, the owner of Torpys, was a friendly face at the end of a long day's cycling. As well as being able to offer us a variety of different options for accommodating us to suit our budget, he went out of his way to provide us with anything we needed. We opted for a motel room, which had a lovely view over the surrounding fields. The hospitality at Torpys was second to none, we were made to feel like guests in his home.

As a couple on a charity cycle ride around the world, Andy went out of his way to set us up on the next leg of our journey, boosting the eco hospitality credentials of Torpys.

Braidwood is a lovely historical little town to visit and Torpys a good place to stay.

I stayed in this very quaint and quiet guest house for one night. The guest-house is an historic building in a very quiet street. (But the whole of Braidwood in the middle of the week is pretty quiet.)The room was average size and decorated in in a shabby chic style. The guest house managers were very thoughtful and considerate. But they were still renovating the property so there was an element that all their final touches were yet to be completed. The property backs onto a creek with platypus and is close to Torpy's restaurant (I think a separate business to that of the guesthouse) where the food was excellent. At $145 for the two of us, it was a bit pricey for Braidwood, but you got a bit of atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask for a room backing onto the creek as this would be northfacing and more private than the room fa...
