“Like staying at Great Aunt Margaret's”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

This is a wonderful winter hide-away and a perfect spot for back country winter sports. Our cabin was snug and cozy and filled with personal touches. We had a full kitchen, but we also had a meal delivered (Room service! Like having your Great Aunt Margaret bring you dinner in bed!) from the tiny but delicious restaurant. The bed was terrific, firm and piled high with quilts. The big bonus was being able to purchase sno-park passes from the front office. Staff were friendly and extremely helpful.

Fun, cozy and unique. Great wine selection! Make reservations for dinner. We stayed at St, Nicks. Fun-will be back. Hope to bring some friends next time. Went snowshoeing out the front door. Drove up the road to Hope Valley Outdoors Cross Country. Big and beautiful! No crowds. Nice staff-desk and kitchen! On a one to five scale-Great! Luv-it.

For the last 15 years we have stayed 5 nights at Sorensen's each winter. It is a one of a kind place, where amazingly, you can get away from phone calls and computers. Hope Valley is full of wonderful trails where you can cross country ski or snow shoe for free, and Kirkwood is a short drive for those who want more speed. Our children love Sorensen's even more, a safe place where they can build snowmen, sled, and come into the cafe for free hot chocolate all day long. Because we come every year, we have been there with mountains of snow, and when there wasn't a drop. But we have always found plenty of activites and places to explore nearby. It isn't the destination for people who always have to have things just so; it isn't a mega resort and you are above 6000 feet in a remote spot in the Sierras. The beauty and pristine location are to be cherished. The cafe is great, but you can also save a lot of money by packing food to cook in the well stocked kitchens. The owners are also active in keeping Hope Valley free of commercialism and excess and they are also humane employers who treat their employees well. It is Yosemite without the crowds and much better food.

It's been 3 years since our last visit to Sorensen's and we were not disappointed to return to the same cabin, Sierra House, for 3 nights rights before New Year's.
The best part about Sorensen's is the staff: they are beyond helpful and accommodating. There's really nothing they won't do to make sure your stay is great.
Is Sorensen's perfect? No, not really. There is only spotty and intermittent Internet service and there is no cell phone connection near the resort. The dining room can be a little cramped (don't pick the table near the restroom door...), but the food is wonderful.
The surroundings cannot be beat: Hope Valley has some amazing and inexpensive snow-shoeing and Xcountry skiing terrain and nearby Markleeville has Grover's Hot Springs.
After the staff, the next best part is just relaxing in your cabin at Sorensen's, where the kitchen is so well equipped that you really CAN cook even a gourmet meal yourself.
We cannot wait to return for another stay at Sorensen's in Hope Valley

Room Tip: For a family Sierra House is a good choice. We've stayed there with 2 adults and 4 teenagers or...

As someone who relies on Review sites when I make travel reservations, I feel compelled to share my experience at Sorenson’s so that others can make informed choices as they book. There are many wonderful things about Sorenson’s (including the kind service in the restaurant, the good food, the stunning natural environment, the great location and proximity to Kirkwood and awesome snow-shoeing/cross country skiing); but, as you might see from the experience my husband and I shared in December 2012, there are also some drawbacks.

This a unique and beautiful location. There aren't many places like it. On the other hand, this puts the management in the position to not to be very concerned about customer service and satisfaction.

This review pertains to the Bed & Breakfast portion and the customer service, at Sorenson's. My husband and I stayed in the Lupine room of the B&B portion. (Most of the accommodations at Sorenson's are private cabins.)

The wall between our room and our neighbor's was unusually thin and the carpet that lined the wall did little to insulate the sound. The neighbor's snoring and sneezing kept my husband and I up, and woke us up at regular intervals throughout the night. I believe that the Sorenson's website and staff should be honest about articulating how thin the walls are in these quarters, and what an intimate experience this makes for. If we had been warned, we would have had different expectations, which would have shaped our perception of Sorenson’s differently.

We were disappointed by the customer service we received in response to our issue. The owner gave us ear plugs and told us that many people want to return to Sorenson's and this man was traveling with people who returned every year. I understand his desire to maintain relationships with loyal customers; yet, at the same time, his response seemed to suggest that we were of little consequence. His business was thriving without us.

Further, Sorenson’s was not open to refunding us, if we decided to leave after the first of our three nights. They offered to give us a credit to return again, only if they were able to fill our room for the following two nights. The lack of flexibility and concern for customer satisfaction left us disappointed.

Ultimately, the owner spoke with the neighbor and the noise was not a problem the following two nights. I was disappointed, however, in the establishment's approach—to make another guest uncomfortable, and make us uncomfortable around him, rather than acknowledging that Sorenson's was responsible for the fact that they had not accurately represented their accommodations and/or offered us some sort of compensation to recognize their accountability for the situation.

Whether you decide to stay here or not...wishing you all the best in your travels in 2013!

Room Tip: I would not recommend the Lupine/Larkspur Bed and Breakfast rooms.

My husband and I went to Sorenson's for one night to celebrate my birthday. We rented the Johan cabin and it was simply perfect. A very cozy little cabin and extremely comfortable bed. We dined in the restaurant and had wonderful meal. The food was fantastic and all of the staff were very accomodating and friendly. I can't wait to go back again and spend another night or two there just relaxing and soaking in the beauty of the area. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing getaway.

This small resort in Hope Valley is a small treasure. Quaint cabins of various sizes, or just rent a room with shared bathroom for a casual getaway. Beautiful surroundings with many activities and workshops, some planned by the resort owners and others on your own. Property also has a small hot sauna. The owners and staff are welcoming and professional, seeing to your needs to ensure a pleasant stay. The small restaurant has wonderful meals all day long and they are famous for their burgundy stew and berry cobbler (5stars). I have never had a bad meal there and always look forward to returning. Try it and you will not be disappointed, guaranteed!
