“Evening with the Locals!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

Coming from Australia, we have been searching for this sort of experience! The Owner behind the bar was great. Friendly & outgoing. Offering fantastic past times in the form of puzzles & games to entertain & test us, raising money for local charities. The Locals were wonderfully friendly & joined us in the games & friendly banter. I'm sure half was influenced by the grog! Beware the Cornish Rattler - deadly! Our meal was good & filling. No complaints there. Beautiful setting & lovely welcoming people.

Room Tip: Pit your skills against the locals with the puzzle & games. Great fun!

English pubs of this calibre and character are sadly going out of business too frequently. This one is thriving and rightly so. We arrived Sunday lunchtime. The bar was full, all the tables seemed to be taken for food and the atmosphere was great as was the local Tribute ale. A local even offered a bar stool so a welcome was assured.
Accommodation - double room en suite for two nights - was good. Slept soundly and we were always clean thanks to five star power shower out of Homes and Garden. Space was a little restricted and could have been irritating for a longer stay. On the food front we enjoyed excellent fish dishes off the specials board together with a cracking bottle of Muscadet ( three actually over two nights )together with excellent English breakfast included in our deal.
We would happily recommend Suzanne and Colin the licensees and their Inn.

We have just had our evening meal at the New Inn in Veryan. Whilst we cannot complain about the cheerful barmaid nor the waitress, we can about the meal. Steak and Ale Pie - really? For this read: three pieces of meat drowning in a sea of gravy with a flat puff pastry roof on an individual pie dish. They did replace the vegetables for chips and salad for me which were okay and the food was very hot but my partner felt he hadn't eaten after the meal, he is not greedy but by any description this was an unsubstantial meal to quickly forget. Of course, we flagged up our disappointment to both the waitress and the barmaid who each responded by saying they would let the kitchen know but nothing else. A very disappointing last meal on our holiday.

visited the pub, located in a quaint village. Shame the young bar man didn't match the location, what arrogance. No eye contact, no thankyou and very little advice on what to have, had no idea about the different strengths of beer and made no attempt to find out. Someone needs to remind him that he's offering a service people pay for, no wonder people are turning to the supermarkets to buy their alcohol, as this young man certainly added no value to my product

We went to the New Inn for dinner our first night in Veryan and ended up going back three more nights during our stay. We were welcomed warmly by Colin, the owner, and by the locals at the bar and nearby tables who gave us (Americans) lots of friendly suggestions about what to do while in the area. Most nights we sat by the warm fire and thoroughly enjoyed the banter of the regulars at the bar doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku together. Several brought their dogs, which we quickly discovered is the custom in English pubs. The menu is mostly comfort food. I particularly liked the steak and ale pie and vegetable chile, while my husband enjoyed the lemon sole and sticky toffee pudding. We also ate at fancier places, like the nearby Nare Inn, where the food was truly exceptional, but we kept returning to the New Inn because it felt more authentic and homey. It was a highlight of our trip!

Just popped in for dinner. Pleasant welcome and atmosphere. Reasonable choice of fare of the chalkboard. Well cooked, presented and served with a smile, good value. My beer was clear and so welcome I had two pints. Would recommend.

Visiting Cornwall again recently we decided to return to The New Inn at Veryan.Once again Suzanne and Colin made us feel very welcome. The food and selection of beers are great and the rooms are very comfortable with everything you could possibly desire for your stay. The service was second to none,so if you're ever in the area we would highly recommend a visit!!!!.
