“Good Hotel,”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

Stayed for 3 nights in September. Our room a good size and was very clean, and cleaned every morning fresh towels everyday, tea and coffee in room, small flat screen tv, we stayed above the bar area, and there was no problem with noise. yes the room could do with an update, but i can honestly say there was nothing at all to complain about.

The breakfast was very nice, good variety, fresh fruit, croissants, cereal, etc, and buffet cooked breakfast, you also have table service to order your eggs, toast, smoked salmon tea coffee etc. Staff were polite and friendly, the hotel grounds were very pretty, we didn't use the pool but it opens at 7am closes at 7pm. The bar staff were great, the menu very reasonable, latte £2, ploughmans salad £9, nice service with a smile.

There's a walking path down to the nearest beach passed the cliff top, beautiful views, and also a path to walk to Charlestown 1 mile plus, lovely walk,(wear walking shoes!) From the hotel it £7 in a cab to the Eden project (cheaper than the 2 buses you'd need to get!) £7 to the train station at St Austell and £17 to heligan gardens. Tip if your not driving get a cab card from the taxi at the station.
Enjoy your trip.

Thank you for your review and so pleased you enjoyed one of chef’s hearty breakfasts. We do pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our rooms and have a great housekeeping team. We do hope you enjoyed the historic port of Charlestown – a very pleasant stroll from the hotel along the beautiful coastal path. We are lucky to be centrally located to many great places, including the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the world famous Eden Project and many beautiful Cornish villages. Come back soon – perhaps on one of our relaxing Christmas Breaks. Our website has more information or contact our Reservations Team on 01726 812345

My new husband and I recently had our wedding at the Cliff Head which was arranged with Lisa Jago (Events Manager at the Cliff Head). Lisa was very personal and felt our wedding was superbly organised. It is an excellent venue for a wedding and the hotel was able to fully accommodate what we were looking for. The food (wedding and breakfast) was excellent and staff were exceptional. We will return to spend another night at one of the sea view rooms.

We had a lovely weekend at the Cliff Head, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We also had a carvery on the Sunday that was very nice, much better than the run of the mill pub carvery. The room was what we expected for what we paid for, the decor could do with a bit more modernization but other than that no complaints and a very nice experience all round.

We are so pleased you enjoyed the carvery which we brought back by popular demand – and very popular it has been! There’s never a rush for our guests to leave – relax in our comfortable lounge with a freshly brewed coffee from our extensive range and put your feet up – afterall, that’s what Sundays are about. Thank you for your review.

I think the room we were given must have been amongst the smallest in the hotel, if not actually the smallest. There was barely room to open our cases and the bathroom was so tiny that it was difficult for me to sit facing forward on the toilet and impossible for my husband. The television was likewise minute - so much so, that even with my distance glasses on I couldn't see the picture clearly. On the plus side, the staff were excellent and the dinner and breakfast very acceptable.

We had an invitation to a wedding at The Eden Project in early September and thought we would use our Tesco Clubcard rewards to find a hotel nearby. The obvious choice was the Best Western Cliff Head Hotel, but it was not cheap, as 3 rooms for 2 nights was close on £650. The reviews on tripadvisor were not favourable, but we wouldn't be at the hotel that much.....

My partner arrived by car and checked in. The receptionist said "Do you want the bad news or the good news?". The bad news news, she replied. "We've given away your king size room, and you have a twin room". And the good news, she asked? "Oh, there isn't any!", she laughed. This sort of sets the scene. Yes, the hotel had given away the room we had booked and paid for and offered a lower value alternative, with no reasonable explanation of why this had happened. It seems if you book with Tesco rewards you are a 2nd class citizen and can be treated this way. The duty manager offered a bottle wine as compensation, but this wasn't a minor issue with which a bottle of wine would suffice.

The twin rooms on the top floor are awful. Sloping ceilings as they are in the roof space and small bathrooms stuck in the corner of an already small room. The room screams 1970s, with wood chip wallpaper and flat-pack furniture. The shower leaked all over the floor because the screen did not touch the bath top. The shower button came off in your hand and it was impossible to control the temperature.

Breakfast - OK, but the small choice of hot food items was contstantly running out. One minute no eggs, then no sausages, etc. There was no orange juice at one point and a small jug then appeared with some in. The staff on duty were good in fairness and took orders as fast as they could. On the second day my partner wanted salmon and scrambled eggs, but they had run out! The waiter offered haddock as an alternative, but she didn't want that. The hotel was full after another wedding reception, so how could they run out of basic menu items?

Parking is in short supply at times, but parking is allowed on the road. The hotel is clean, but it needs some money spending on rooms.

We spoke to the General manager on the day after we got home. He has offered a refund on the room, so that will go some way towards compensation. It's not a hotel I would revisit, which is a shame as the area is lovely and Carlyon beach is just down the road.

We looked at the reviews so knew not to expect the ritz. Having booked through late rooms we knew that the rooms would be at the back end of beyond. Room was ok, though with tellys mounted on the wall you get a lot of noise throughout the evening from the rooms below.
Shower was pathetic, over the bath tap switch and either scalding hot or freezing cold. Hot towel rail was so hot it has left lasting scars on my leg! But....for all that, rooms were spotlessly clean, the staff were friendly and extremely helpful and breakfast was yum ( although catering for coach parties and old people meant no fresh fruit, prunes are not everyones cup of tea!) The view over the bay is wonderful and the setting makes for some great walks. Swimming pool is basic - but warm and clean. Great value - but dont expect luxury if you book via late rooms etc.

My wife & I stayed here for a long weekend as part of a large group. At first sight, the hotel looked OK, but soon the shortcomings began to be noticed.

The double room was very small, with a tiny bathroom squeezed into a corner and a sloping roof (second floor). The sink was behind the door, so door had to be closed to use it. The shelf above the sink was just in the right position to bang your head on whilst cleaning teeth. Our room had a bath with a mixer shower, but others in our party reported only a tiny shower cubicle. Shower pressure was minimal and temperature almost impossible to control (hot tap on full and cold almost off). Bed was hard and uncomfortable. Decor was a throwback to the early 70s (artex swirls on the ceiling, woodchip covered in magnolia paint on the walls, cheap pine furniture) but was clean. Sea view over the pool and tennis courts belonging to the neighbouring hotel.

The breakfasts were identical every morning but were of a good standard. However, they were clearly struggling with feeding such a large group all at the same time. We had to wait a very long time for toast and coffee and often they ran out of eggs on the buffet. The 3 course evening meals were included in the rate, but we had a restricted menu to choose from, and had to make our choice at breakfast each morning. The standard of the food was at best "adequate". All meals were fully plated, so no choice of which veg and how much. Meats were OK but fish was usually overcooked. Soups were very good. All meals were piping hot. The main menu, available to individual guests, looked more inviting.

All of the staff we met were friendly and helpful and service was efficient. Reasonable selection of drinks from the bar but a little pricey.

Overall, for the price, the standard was reasonable, but I have certainly had better experiences at many other UK Best Westerns (notably the Salutation at Ambleside, which was excellent). Some of my criticisms might well be the result of our being a large group, but they did accept the booking after all.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Although a disappointing read it does give us the opportunity to listen to our customers and make improvements. We have a refurbishment programme in place and recently purchased some lovely new beds. Service is important to us and we are constantly looking into improving ways of service in our restaurant and lounge areas. We hope you will make a return visit to see the improvements made.
