“Wonderful hotel, great golf”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

This was our second visit to Carlyon Bay and it was every bit as good as last year. We are already anticipating our next stay at this lovely hotel. We were lucky enough to have a deluxe room with a sea view which meant that even when the weather was not great our holiday was made just by sitting in our bedroom and looking out at the view!
The staff are superb, the food is excellent and the ambience is great.
We played golf every day on the excellent course. Play can be a bit slow at busy times but we were fortunate to select a good slot on two of our four days which enabled us to play without being held up or being pressed from behind.
The little pitch-and-putt course right by the hotel is fun for all the family. The grounds are lovely and there is tennis, swimming and the spa for non-golfers
The hotel is also ideally situated for trips to nearby attractions such as the Eden project and the Lost Gardens of Helligan.

Room Tip: If you can afford a sea view room at any level, they will be quieter and have a nicer view than the...

Second visit, this time with a group of "mature" golfers. Good value package where you do get a room with a car park view, but you can't see the sea at night! Room looked like it had been recently decorated and the bathroom was new. Bottles of water and a phone call to check all ok were a nice touches. The course was well presented and the friendly clubhouse does good food at reasonable prices. The hotel welcome was excellant and the surrounding outside area including gardens were well presented. We took dinner in the main restaurant and the food choice was better than expected and cooked to a high standard which I would say was better than last year. Seemed to be some evening entertainment in the lounge which I wasnt expecting although we didnt stay. If you want a decent standard of hotel for both service & facilities then this would be a good choice although it can be expensive unless you can seek out a special package offer.

Room Tip: Few rooms have a balcony so unless you really want to look out of a window at the sea then front fac...

Stayed for 3 nights this September and was very pleased overall.
Lovely room with a sea view. Two very good restaurants.Internal decor very smart and tasteful.
Beatiful outside seating areas with amazing views of the Bay. The staff were very professional but not that friendly.
The one area of letdown was the lounge bar staff serving coffee who were badly trained and very inattentive to their customers' needs.

I have just spent three nights at this lovely hotel. The hotel was fresh, clean and well equipped and the restaurant was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for the young, well trained staff who were extremely courteous and professionally attired. The hotel provided an experience that many other hotels could learn from. The spa was a welcome area in which to relax and enjoy the facilities. The golf course was in very good condition and the pro shop staff could not have been more helpful. Will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: I think it well worth the extra cost to have a sea view.

We stayed for one night in September as part of a tour of Cornwall taking in St Austell, Fowey, St Mawes, Mawgan Porth, Padstow & Rock. The Carlyon Bay was the most disappointing hotel despite being the most expensive.

The pros:

Great views of the bay.
Bedroom tastefully decorated.
Cosy bar area.
Indoor & outdoor pool.

The cons:

Ridiculous cancellation policy when we tried to change a booking by one night.
Standard breakfast charge no matter what you eat (charged standard £18 for an omelette despite being told we could purchase individually on entry)
Very thin walls, floors & ceilings so you hear everything from adjoining rooms.
Tiny, very old fashioned bathrooms (badly in need of expansion & update).
Vastly overpriced.

We booked months ahead (you have to pay in full at time of booking) & subsequently tried (4 months in advance) to change the date slightly. We were told that this is not allowed & we'd just have to buy the alternative day as extra unless we had their cancellation insurance. We asked to buy the cancellation insurance only to be told they wouldn't sell it to us as they thought we'd use it and they couldn't re-sell the room at only 4 months notice (hardly a vote of confidence). Such a policy should not be tolerated in this day & age and epitomises the overwhelming feeling we left with, namely that management just try to fleece customers at every opportunity rather than really caring about providing a service commensurate with price.

As a guide to how overpriced the rooms are here, we stayed at the St Enodoc hotel in Rock (housing a two Michelin Star restaurant) in a larger, better appointed room, with a bathroom treble the size & equivalent bay view for £215 per night all paid on departure (and free cancellation up to 24hrs before). The Carlyon Bay was £310 all paid in advance for a deluxe double (room 207) with no cancellation allowed under any circumstances.

Don't be swayed as we were by the nice pictures on the website. Elements of the hotel (management attitude, cancellation policy and bathrooms in particular) are 25 years out of date & there are much better options out there.

I have visited Carlyon Bay Hotel every year for over ten years now for a golf weekend, and I must say that it is better than ever. Everything was good, the food, the accommodation and the staff were exceptional.
It is a well maintained hotel and also very comfortable with lovely views.
Can't wait to visit again.

Room Tip: Room 123 does have a generator noise that you can hear early morning, but not bad enough to change r...

Stayed in August for 6 nights
This place was so nice
The staff are ALL so kind
The room are small but with such lovely views
The pool were very nice
The food is AMAZING
The menu for children had 12 or more different options
felt like eating with the children it was SO nice
Evening animation was fun Favorite ; the Casino night
The hotel beach was a mistery to us as we never found it and the transport was not available
We went to the big beach with stuff been demolished and saw plans of what will be built
That will be very nice for the hotel
Wish the weather had been a little bit better
