“Lovely Hotel with Good Facilities and Great Views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

We have just had a short stay at this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed every minute!

The Reception and Dining Rooms are in an old building that has been tastefully restored with very modern interiors, and the bedrooms are in low rise modern wings that follow the hill contours. This means that there is some distance between Reception and the furthest rooms, but staff were very willing to assist with bags.

The bedrooms are spacious and well fitted out in a modern open plan style, and our only criticisms were the lack of air conditioning and the odd little sink that you have to keep water running into (somewhat wasteful?). Other people may not like the the fact that the bath & shower are in the open plan area, and so you can look over the person in bed and out of the picture window whilst you shower! Works for me!

During our stay we used the Spa facilities and both restaurants, as well as having cream teas on the terrace. The Spa is well equipped, with a good gym, and a fantastic infinity pool. On one side of the pool the wall is plate glass with opening panels so that you are in fact swimming in the garden. There is also a sauna and a steam room.

The meals that we had in both the restaurants, and the breakfast room were all first class. We could not fault the quality of the ingredients or the presentation of the dishes in either restaurant, and the breakfast buffet was superb and constantly replenished.

The parklands are great for walking, and wild life, and we were able to watch buzzards flying which was special.

All the staff we dealt with or spoke to were helpful and efficient, from the receptionist to the waiters to the ground staff. Obviously someone has taken the effort to impart the news that customer satisfaction comes first!

We would certainly return to this hotel, and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. Also, some great deals are available on-line.

Thank you for your really kind words and comments. The superior rooms (open plan) really do have the best views in the hotel, and sitting on the balcony is just bliss. We would love to see you again soon.

In a nut shell, we stayed on the hottest weekend of the year. Staff morale appeared VERY low, as a number of staff were off "sick" which affected the service terribly. Examples - We waited 25 minutes for sandwiches to appear, and a further 20 mins for ice cream at lunch time! At night, the bar staff member checked his watch and appeared thoroughly bored in his job and staff appeared anxious to close up and go home. The coffee was luke warm and received a similar response when I asked for some hot water.
We were woken on sunday morning at 7.30 am to advise that spa treatments had to be altered due to staff sickness. This was far too early. The treatments turned out to be badly timed with the nail polish smudging 1 hour of completion. A huge disappointment, as the hotel has such fantastic potential and Spa infinity pool was amazing!
I am sorry, but management need to be aware as customers expect a much better service/experience when staying in such a classy environment. There is desperate need for staff customer training - especially the night team. There should be food available, especially after a well publicised concert. (Jessie J at Eden) Sandwiches is not good enough. (The other couple were told there was no food available)
Claire, the Breakfast manager needs a special mention, as her attitude and helpfulness was superb. The breakfast was a different experience all together.
Perhaps with Training and a pay rise, these staff may feel more inclined to be more motivated!!

We really do hate the fact that we have failed to make a good impression on your recent stay and I can only apologise. We were very short staffed and as you noticed this had a knock on effect with some of the team members, which I would say is NOT typical, but given the extremely hot weather and the hours that we asked the staff to cover, some up to 12 hours can explain this but certainly does not excuse it either. As the General Manager I am fully aware of customer service, as I was the previous Operations Manager for 9 months I worked with the team solidly, working 80 hours a week to increase customer service. We also have a further 12 staff about to embark on 16 weeks of NVQ training, and always developing the team where there is weaknesses. We are human, however there seems to be a catalogue of errors during your stay and I am embarrassed that this has happened. Customer staff training has, as I said been on-going, and will continue to be on-going…it never stops as we try and better service day in and day out. With regards to late night eating, I did not feel the need to have extra food available, there were simply not sufficient guests attending that event otherwise food would have gone to waste and our 24 hour room service was available. Claire is a real star, and she is an example of what the team can deliver when providing their usual levels of service and hospitality. My humble apologies, but thank you for letting us know.

We stayed in a Luxury Room booked Direct through the hotel.
Bad start - requested Champagne in the room upon arrival which wasn't done. When it finally arrived it was the wrong one and as Reception wouldn't answer the phone we carried the champagne down to be told to wait there while they replaced it. Oh and the glass when toasted went 'donk' Cheap and tacky.

The room though clean was in serious need of maintainance. The welcome book was torn and broken, there was chips in the bath, yes you read it right. There was a random metal pole in the corner of our room. Lighting was poor made even worse when we wanted to make a coffee, as there was only 2 plug sockets for the lamp, kettle and fridge (we went at the start of Britains 2013 heatwave).
The balcony was nice but offered no privacy from fellow guests as we could see and be seen across the whole of the row. Forget security as part of the partitions were at waist height so easy to get over.
The room its self did have expensive furnishings but apart from the fridge it was no better than a Premier Inn; but at least there when our upstairs neighbours woke us in the morning when they walked across their room and open their Balcony doors we would have got our money back.
The Restaurant and Bistro service was disgraceful. Having worked in the industry we both know what to expect at a 4 star level, they couldn't even produce a service that warranted a 3 star level. What did they do you wonder well this is just a few of the basic mistakes they made:
- Warm white wine and mineral water; with the offer of ice cubes in the glasses to chill the wine already poured.
- Decantered Wine in the Kitchen not at the table; the waitress having to use two hands to then pour the first glasses. Good job we knew our £50.00 bottle of wine.
- Having to serve our own wine through out all meals.
- Serving Ice Cream in a cereal bowl and not even bothered to explain what the flavours were.
- Didn't ask if our meal was okay.
- ignored after we ordered coffees but managed to serve others around us.
- handed us the bill to sign without even bothered to ask if we wanted anything else.

Did we complain - no not to the staff at the time but we did dutifully fill in the guest comment sheet with a little extra and addressed it to the general manager, who like his staff has completed ignored us.

Would we recommend? No! Would we go back? No! Have we struck it off the possible Wedding Venue List? Yes!!

Disappointed as there is a clear attitude that because its Cornwall we don't really have to add the finishing touches that a 4 star establishment should have.

Room Tip: Top floor in Woodland section so you are not woken up

I really do not know where to begin, we have certainly failed you miserably and I can’t offer my sincere apologies enough. This is certainly not indicative of the service and hospitality that we strive to achieve on a daily basis. Your comment card that you kindly filled out has been be shared and discussed at our weekly heads of department meeting and I am waiting on feedback from the various departments as to what when wrong, why it went wrong and what measures are being put in place to ensure that this does not recur. So although you feel I have not given your comments any attention I would disagree, and please be assured you will be receiving a call from me to discuss this further. Once again my deepest apologies.

Hotel asked for feedback via trip advisor so here goes : The hotel is generally very good and as the title says we booked last minute initially for 3 nights but stayed longer as it was so good and good value.
Good points - the spa has the best hotel pool I have been in- doors open onto a wonderful walled garden - brand new tennis courts- Rooms are modern and spacious- grounds are fantastic, you will see deer if you are up early enough - great cycle trail right opposite that runs all the way to Megavissey. Fantastic breakfast chef, hot food excellent and never had to wait - attentive staff.

Criticisms - no air con in rooms (it was 29 deg outside), but it is peaceful enough to leave patio doors open at night. Not sure about the trendy washbasin (try having a shave in it). car park nearest hotel entrance is too small and other car parks are a little unfinished and far away. The design of Acorns restaurant is such that at certain tables you are looking at the backs of a row of staff stood at the bar, occasionally just chatting. Some of the rooms overlook the bin store as does the breakfast room. Move it or put a roof on it !
I suspect that when all the surrounding lodges are finished the price may go up but at present it represent good value for money and I would certainly go back.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are nearer the spa but no different otherwise, however some do overlook the bin sto...

It’s amazing how many of our guests actually extend their stay for longer and of course we are overjoyed that you loved your time with us. Thank you for your kind comments including the areas that we need to consider such as air conditioning. We have just completed moving one of our car parks to another area in preparation for phase two of thirteen new lodges, which in turn we had to relocate our bins. We will be covering the bin area by extending the roofing with wooden purlins and then planting a fast growing vine to disguise what lies underneath. We understand the importance of offering value for money and as such our philosophy is to offer our best prices in advance as well as some great offers for mid-week and week end breaks. Thank you once again and we look forward to seeing you back again soon.

We truly hope you enjoyed your romantic break with us and thank you for your valued feedback. The weather is just wonderful, temperatures that we are certainly not used to. The balcony doors are great to open during the night letting in the cool fresh air. Please do come back and visit us again.

I stayed in this hotel last week with my family. The rooms were very well maintained and the balcony and fan were nice little touches, with all the hot weather there has been recently!
It was incredibly easy to book spa treatments and the receptionists were very pleasant.
In terms of location, this hotel is two miles away from Porth Pean beach and many other towns popular with tourists, such as Megavissey. I found the hotel was well equipped with leaflets regarding 'things to do' whilst on holiday.
The Breakfast was perfectly adequate and organised. At night the bar staff were a little different: it was obvious they were busy, and it took half an hour before a member of my group asked to be served. When we did get served though, the staff were lovely about it.
In terms of sleep quality, this hotel is excellent. The comfortable beds and french windows on the balcony made for a peaceful night for all!
The only issue is that I felt certain staff in the Breakfast and the Reception were ignoring my teenage sister and I in favour of our parents, as if we were less of a guest. For example, my sister and I went for a walk around the grounds and cleaners could be heard 'stressing out' about the staff shortages on that particular day, and did not stop discussing this when we walked past. A little rude!
It would have been nice if staff could give all the family eye contact and a warm smile, instead of appearing cold towards younger members of the family.
Other than this, I would certainly return to The Cornwall, because the excellent spa facilities, beautiful grounds and prime location meant that my holiday was a memorable one!

Room Tip: The first floor rooms are more likely to be adapted for disabled access e.g: a lower sink

Thank you for your kind feedback and especially in terms of a family review. We certainly welcome your comments and as a team we will review our interaction with family members. I know we do make a fuss over young toddlers and children but as you quite rightly point out you and your sister are just as important, if not even more so as you are our future guests. The staff really shouldn't air the day to day issues and challenges that we have, it’s not professional. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and thank you once again.

This is a beautiful hotel in stunning grounds with a real unique feel. Check in was smooth & thanks to Emily on reception who efficiently managed our room change. We opted for a superior room with the open plan bathroom. The rooms are spacious & modern with fabulous balconies with panoramic views. We visited during the July heatwave & the hotel let it self down by not having air conditioning. We had a fan on constantly overnight & the room was still uncomfortably hot. The fridge was also barely functional & when we queried this with reception we were advised that they just don't get cold - not ideal!

We ate in the brasserie & the food was of a good standard. Breakfast was also of a good quality.

We enjoyed the spa but felt it was a shame that the doors on the infinity pool were closed despite the warm temperatures. We were also asked to leave at 19.50 so the staff could close up despite being advised that the pool was open until 20.00. The jacuzzi was completely broken which was a real disappointment.

Despite some small issues, this is a fabulous hotel in a stunning location & we can't wait to return.

Sorry that we just missed the mark but we are grateful for your comments. With the exceptional heat the bedrooms do get warm and as much as we would love to have air conditioning we have to rely on fans, which we have placed into every room. The fridges are mini bar fridges and therefore are not really used to store food, but even these are struggling with the heat, not wishing to complain about good weather now that it is here. On the whole the windows have been opened up for the infinity pool but I am rather annoyed that the Spa staff asked you to leave early, so I will take this up with the head of department. Thank for your kind comments and we look forward to seeing you again.
