We first stayed in the Driftwood Spars last year and despite all the niggles (which still exist!) returned for a second visit this year.
The reasons for our return remain the same and would probably draw us back again but the niggles would make us think twice.
The GOOD: the position of the Driftwood is great. It sits right on the coastal path with wonderful walks to both west and east so you can leave your car in the car park and spend your days walking along very scenic coastline. St Agnes is quite a busy little tourist town with a few shops and various pubs and restaurants but the Driftwood is slightly set apart down at Trevaunance Cove; this is full of tourists during the day but by evening is much quieter.
The restaurant of the Driftwood is modern and bright with good views over the cove and the food is excellent. I find the review by guests who experienced a bad breakfast surprising as on all three morning our breakfast was very good; fresh melon and pineapple, prunes and grapefruit, yoghurt and a good selection of freshly and well cooked hot food. Even the toast was cooked to order and was crisp (not soggy as per many hotels etc). Many guests prefer to eat in one of the characterful bars. Outside the restaurant are three little terrace balconies where it very pleasant to sit before and after dinner on a warm night.
The staff of the hotel are both a plus and a minus, most are young, enthusiastic and helpful but one or two just don't listen when you speak and consequently get orders wrong etc. We found the manager to be very helpful and pleasant but he was only there for one of our three nights.
Our room had a lovely view of the cove.
The BAD: I don't like to criticise places that I like but I feel the Driftwood could benefit from taking note of, and acting on, the comments on Tripadvisor so I will add our dissatisfactions.
Our room and bathroom were in dire need of a refubishment. The bed was comfortable but a bit too soft, housekeeping were not careful about making it so the vallance was crooked and tucked beneath the mattress in places giving an untidy and uncared for appearance.
The furniture is flimsy and cheap, the dressing table stool had a leg that was about to fall off so you couldn't sit on it, there were just four hangers in the wardrobe. There was very little drawer space. There was just one comfortable chair in the bedroom! (Driftwood is not alone in this but I can never understand why guest accommodation so often just provides one chair when the rooms are meant for two!).
There were new curtains but no-one had bothered to gather them and hang them properly. They were of a thinnish fabric and let too much light in, so by 5.00am we were awake every day. The curtain rails didn't match each other.
The room would look much nicer with a flat screen TV on the wall instead of the old fashioned model that took up so much space.
The plumming was incredibly noisy so, when our neighbours went to bed at 12.30mn, we were awoken by the noise of water rushing through pipes; it was so loud that it sounded like a fire alarm.
The bathroom was dated and, because there were no tops to the taps, you couldn't tell which was hot or cold except by trial and error.
In general cleanliness was not brilliant.
So Driftwood please try to address some of these points. We would love to return but also like our comfort when we are away on holiday!
