“This is a pub with rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

The guest info pack states that "The Driftwood Spars is many things but comes into its own as a pub" and this is certainly very true. The pub/bars are cosy and welcoming with log fires and lots of atmosphere. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, food of a reasonable standard, we were impressed with Fish Friday. However as a B&B it lacks a little attention to detail. On the first morning of our stay the breakfast waitress informed us that they had run out of baked beans!but offered to double up on one of the other breakast items as a substitute. On the second morning, there was no Granary bread, only white. On the third morning everything seemed to be ok, although very busy.
The accommodation was ok but nothing special.I cannot help thinking that with a little more thought, attention to detail and negligable extra cost the B&B could be so much better, but that said they seem to do a reasonably good trade with the accommodation. So why bother to go that extra mile and fold used guest towels in the bathroom, replace daily the flimsy disposable plastic beakers - (we had the same ones for three days) or remake the beds using the fancy cushions and decorative "trim" - (ours were just left in a heap on the stool) As I said just a little more thought and attention to detail. It's the little things that make a differance.

Thank you for your comments. As a business we have just joined trip advisor so I was unable to respond before. Since your stay we have appointed a breakfast chef who is responsible for ordering breakfast items however our bread is delivered fresh daily and due to circumstances beyond our control had not been delivered on time that particular morning. I have also passed your comments regarding attention to detail in our rooms to our head house keeper. Thanks once again for your comments as a business we can only improve with feedback from our customers. We hope to welcome you here again in the future.

We were told about The Driftwood Spars by our camp site manager. Its just down by the beach, right at the bottom of the hill leading down from St Agnes.

Nicely decorated inside, friendly staff and a great selection of ales both local and from elsewhere. They brew their own ales and we tried all four that where available during our stay over a few days. 3 out of 4 of them where great!!! Atmosphere in the pub on a Friday night was cool and with free wifi, we were able to organise/book the next leg of our journey. On both nights we were there, locals struck up friendly conversation with me and my wife. :)

We didn't eat from the restaurant or bar menu, but at a quick glance it was priced modestly and had a great selection of meals (even for vegetarians).

Will recommend this place to anyone that heads down to Cornwall.

Stayed many times over the last 6 years, staff always friendly, food good, beer great. We stayed before we had kids and had two dogs, then stayed several times since the kids along...always made to feel very welcome.

Booked this without really reading other reviews, or spotting that it’s a pub (didn't read the notes very well!) so we were a bit apprehensive when we realised. We’d been hoping for somewhere quiet and peaceful. As things turned out we were in the “garden annexe” where we had plenty of space (2 whole bedrooms!) and a very peaceful outlook on the garden. As a result we had a great time and will probably return. Parking was really easy in a numbered space in the local car park. The breakfast and evening meal were both perfectly acceptable, despite the tinned music playing, and the whole thing represented excellent value for money. The Inn itself is brilliantly located right by the beach and the management were cleverly able to lay on a fantastic sunset for us. As a lapsed Geologist the region was brilliant for mine dumps, and I regretted having left my hammer at home.

Room Tip: go for the garden annexe for peace

We used to enjoy eating at the restaurant and having not been there to eat for a couple of years we looked forward to going back for the Sunday lunch which was always excellent. On walking in the restaurant seemed to have changed, it looked tired and more like a school canteen. We were left hanging around waiting to be seated for quite some time even though there were lots of staff and very few diners. The drinks took a long time and when they came they were wrong, the starters were okay but the veg with the main were overdone and nowhere near as nice as they used to be. The biggest problem (after the food) seemed to be a dis-organised group of young staff without any strong leadership. Having served only 4 of the 5 main courses and with no cutlery for us to eat, the waitress asked if we had everything we needed!

This place always used to be packed on a Sunday and it was not surprising that it was now half full given the change. The couple next to us had a catalogue of errors with their order and finally left without paying after a couple of mouthfuls of the main course as it was so bad.

Such a shame as we are unlikely now to go back having gone there for 15 years.

Thank you for your comments. As a business we have only just joined trip advisor so I was unable to respond to your comments until now. I am very sorry you had a negative experience dining with us. Since your visit we have improved staff training and always have a manager or shift supervisor working on every shift. Once again I thank you for your comments, as a business we can only improve with feedback from our customers.

This is a nice pub in a lovely cove, almost right on the sea front. It serves great beer (they brew thei own) and the bar has a great atmosphere. However, we also visited for dinner one evening and went up to the restaurant, which by contrast had a quite formal feel (waitresses in uniform) and felt more like an old sea front hotel. The food was OK, but nothing special, which was a shame as the pub itself has such a great feel.

We stayed here a few times over twenty years ago, and after a short two night visit in June this year, we went back at the end of August for five nights. We loved the recent changes to the rooms and the relatively new restaurant area. The pub is almost exactly like it used to be, fine beer and wine, excellent food, good service by friendly staff.

We ate in the bar each night and some lunchtimes, and as we come from Brixham, we like eating fresh fish, although my wife is more experimental with other types of food. We had a wonderful holiday, and at all times the staff were very kind and helpful.

We've already booked a 3-for-2 weekend stay in November, and can't wait to get there.

Room Tip: Room five is quite small but faces away from the rising sun if that bothers you in the early morning...
