Redruth is not the richest of areas. A former mining town, well past its peak, it is in receipt of EU redevelopment grants. From a tourist viewpoint, it is conveniently placed for both north and south Cornish coasts. The Penventon Park Hotel is a former mansion, built in the 19C by a brewery magnate. The park is all but gone, being largely tarmac today, apart from the entrance avenue.
The business strategy of the hotel seems to be cleft in two. On the one hand, there are aspirations to be posh. The brochures are littered with words like 'wealthy' and ''elite', even if they refer to a past of long ago. But the food is undoubtedly good. Locals come here for celebrations such as weddings and birthday dinners, because it could be thne most sumptuous place in the area.
On the other hand, someone in charge clearly wants to maximise the utilisation. To the horror of anyone who wants a peaceful dinner, a nightclub and ballroom have been bolted onto the side of the hotel, and rumbles and booms vibrate through the walls. No amount of piano-playing can hide the rumbles, although it had to be said that the pianists are good. Also in the spirit of asset utilisation, the hotel's spa pool has been opened up to locals for a parent-and-baby session on Saturday mornings. If you were in two minds about taking a dip, the thought of all those nappy-clad nine-month-olds having been in the water, some quite literally, is offputting.
The design of the rooms is from an era gone by. Many seem far too small to be described as standard doubles. Big enough for an itinerant salesman on his own, but not acceptable for a couple staying several days. Even the design of the larger 'garden rooms' is showing its age. Creaking from the room above -- couldn't they build concrete ceilings? The hot tap is far too hot, and not channeled into a single mixer outlet with the cold water. The ground floor rooms share a patio with the other rooms, which merges seamlessly with the gardens. You can't open the sliding door-window without creating a security risk. Goodness knows how people keep cool on hot summer nights.
We were advised on our first day not to park next to the trees, as previous guests had had their car broken into, albeit some years ago.
A final word about the dinners, where the food is very good. But you cannot go straight into the dining room. You arrive at your appointed hour, and they turn you away into a noisy bar, in the hope you'll buy a pricey drink, no doubt. Eventually you'll be given a menu, and some time your order will be taken. Perhaps 20-25 minutes after your booked table time, they tell you your table is ready. I've never witnessed anything like it, except on Fawlty Towers 'Gourmet Night' episode.
That all said, we have enjoyed our time here and taking in the wonderful experiences of Cornwall. I feel the Penventon had to sort out where it's headed, and wish it well. I don't know quite where it should head, but the tiny double rooms have to go, and the dining room has to be soundproofed. Also I really don't appreciate loud radio being piped in for my breakfast.
