“Not bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Lovely cove. Parking next to the pub in an official car park only costs 1 pound overnight, but a road 20m around the corner (Portmellon Park) is free.

The bar staff were very friendly, and the main bar overlooks the cove. It seemed to us that the covered seats could do with refurbishment, and the slight smell of pets was in the air. We ate the sea bass, and it was OK. It is the only the only pub I have ever seen that allows you to pay with cash or a cable-less card machine, which is inventive.

We had a room over the front door, with a low window (overlooking the car park and the beach), with a skylight. Remember to close the shade before you sleep, but the seagulls will remind you to get up. :)
Getting back up to the room is difficult, because there seem to be three ways to get to it, but there are no lights in the hallway, so I had to use a torch to find the keyhole.

The breakfast was average (I'm not saying it was bad at all, but not up to others we had experienced). The breakfast room could also do with refurbishment, as it felt like a tea room/restaurant in the 1960s. A man on the next table (two other couples were staying), remarked, "This place used to be packed", which proves the point, I suppose.

A local pointed out that the council refuse to replace the old slipway, which would encourage boats to be moored there. That would improve the popularity of the cove no end, which would then be shown in the The Rising Sun.

Room Tip: Ask how to get to a room, but take a torch.

We had a lovely stay at The Rising Sun Inn earlier this year. The owners were very friendly and accommodating, breakfast was wonderful and kept us going for the whole day!! Our room was rather cramped but adequate as we were only there to sleep. Mevagissey was 10-15 minutes walk away but beware the hill on the way back :)

Visited The Rising Sun during a weeks holiday in the nearby village of Mevagissey, The food and drink here was excellent, The owners were welcoming and friendly. The fella loved the local cider and his burger. Unfortunately the same can't be said about the pork pie he ordered to takeaway for later in the evening, the seagulls however didn't complain and loved the undercooked pastry.

We went back later in the week for another meal but unfortunately arrived a little late and they had stopped serving food. Would recommend.

We spent our first family break in a very long time here during June 2012 half term and had THE BEST TIME ever. A lovely, warm atmosphere with some lovely local ciders and perrys; and fantastic views of the cove and the sea. Can't wait to come back again soon. Thanks for a wonderful time.

We have been to this pub many times over the years when we come to the area on holiday, the location is superb and we have previously been delighted with it. However we went there on Christmas Eve 2011 as we were again on holiday in the area, the pub had no festive atmosphere, there were curled up,stale nibbles on the bar and there was a electric heater on when there was a lovely old fireplace available! Maybe it's because it was out of season but it certainly changed out opinion of one of our favourite holiday pubs!

I have a home nearby, so not a resident - visited the pub only with friends and so pleased to see it doing well. The management are doing a great job, very hospitable and a lovely place to where everyone is welcome to eat and drink as it should be. Food was good and in a great atmosphere. Look forward to my next visit. Harriet
