“Warm, cosy and friendly.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2007

Elizabeth and Nick, London

Me and my partner had a wonderful stay at the Inn On The Hill.
It is a lovely family run place, where the owners were very friendly and really made our stay comfortable.
The food was beautiful and we were very impressed with the range of choice on the menu, some really good dishes!! was hard to choose!!
After we ate, it was nice to relax in the bar, which had a really nice country atmosphere :)
The room had everything we needed, and was very cosy, and it was lovely to be surrounded by the moorland countryside. we had our own back door to the garden from our room, it was lovely!
The views are stunning up there, the location is spot on, on a sunny day, we walked up caradon hill and the view was incredible, we could see for miles accross cornwall and devon!!
I would highly recommend this place to anyone, couples or families, it has everything u need for a perfect country break.
We really enjoyed ourselves, hope you do too!

Rural location with access via an unmade track, not suitable for very low ground clearance vehicles. Direct access to Bodmin Moor, with good walking up Caradon Hill, to the village of Minions (tea rooms etc.), and on to the Cheesewring (a rock outcrop), Cheesering Quarry, and The Hurlers (stone circles).
The best feature of this small hotel is the DELICIOUS FOOD, it may be best to book half board accommodation to ensure you can eat here.
The rooms are located in a ground floor accommodation block, joined to the inn, they look and feel rather like 1960’s holiday chalets. Access is from an internal corridor on one side, and directly into the garden on the other side. We stayed in the family room (suite), which offered good value for money for children (free!). Comprises: Doors into double room with TV, washbasin, hairdryer & tea making facilities; door into twin room, which leads into a modern shower room with WC, basin and heated towel rail. All rooms were very compact, there was no space for chairs. There were picture hooks, but no pictures, some fittings falling off the walls, and others fallen off and in the cupboard. We re-fixed a door handle which fell off when I tried to close the door (always bring a swiss army knife on holiday). Walls seemed quite thin. Room heaters fitted.
A good full English breakfast is served, you book the time the evening before.

We do serve absolutely fantastic food and yes it is essential to book in advance.
As this lady pointed out our rooms have some small points which need updating and these are in the process of being done systematically. However, as you can see yes children go free ie. we do not charge extra for them as all our rooms are on a room charge basis not per person.
Unfortunately the family room will be withdrawn sometime over the next year as we wish to only cater for couples and families with children over the age of 14

We stayed here for a weekend away in Decmber. Not always the best time to stay out in the wilds on the moors but the location, friendliness of the owners and the excellent comfort more than made up for the depressing weather.
We arrived to the hotel up the winding track which was a bit off putting at first because you really dont know whether you are on the right road or not and then in the mist ahead we saw lights.....yes it was Wheal Tor. It was like something out of a spooky movie where the place suddenly appears !! The owners were welcoming and friendly and we were heartily welcomed with a wonderful drink sat in front of a roaring log fire.
Our room was comfortable and clean and very quiet. We were the only guests! The tea and coffee supplies were plentiful and of a high brand quality not substitute rubbish you get at some hotels.
We had a meal in the bar that evening as we wanted to sit by the fire. Both of us had wonderfully cooked local steaks which were not only huge but very tasty with a homemade stilton sauce and fresh vegetables. The portions were huge but we just had enough room for a bit of pudding !!
Breakfast was just as good, served to us at a time of our choosing not the hotel..........this threw us a bit as we asked what time breakfast was and the owners said "whenever you want it!" As we were off to the Eden Project we had an early start so as expected a hot well cooked breakfast was ready and waiting for us. What amazed us was the spectacular view from the breakfast room of the hotel which we had not seen the night before as it was dark. Wheal Tor is well placed for touring south east cornwall and after a hard day at the Project we found that the comfort it offered more than welcomed us back before the onslaught of another well portioned meal.
We had very few grumbles about the Wheal Tor. One was that their residents lounge was out of action for refubishment mainly due to a recent change of ownership and the old owners taking all the furniture from the lounge !! The new owners have wonderful plans for this little gem of a hotel and we hope that they will put these into practice soon. We would definately recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a wonderful get away from it all break and we will definately be back in the Summer.

What a find !! This place is wonderful. Not only do you have free access to your room to come and go as you like, but the hotel is situated on the side of Caradon Hill on the edge of Bodmin Moor. It was wonderful to wake up to the sound of..........well nothing really as it was sooooo quiet out in the middle of nowhere. (The only noise came from the grass munching sheep and an enormous cock pheasant who woke us up !!) The views from the hotel are amazing and as it was such a wonderful day even for October we were able to sit outside with a glass of real ale and enjoy the view. The hosts were wonderful friendly people and the bar which was frequented by lots of locals was a cosy welcoming place to be. We managed to get fitted in for a meal which was good, nothing fancy just good wholesome home cooking which is what we like. Next year we are returning though this time we are going to stay in the wonderful 4 poster bridal suite.........a proper 4 poster not a cheap furniture chain store replica !!
Cant wait !!
