“Fabulous, and can't wait to go back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2010

Cannot fault the Scarlet, it is worth every cent. We booked the spa, dinner package, and it was fabulous value. Our room was the indulgent room, with a fantastic view. You have to experience the hot tub seaweed bath, looking over the gorgeous view, with a glass of champagne....it does not get better than that! Staff are fantastic, and could not be more helpful. Food was great. Best hotel we have stayed in for a long time, and we can not wait to go back.

This is all going to sound a little fussy -

We stayed at the Scarlet for two nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal as a mini honeymoon straight after we got married. I was a little nervous before arriving as we had had poor communication with the hotel when making the booking and during subsequent enquires with them which resulted in very appologetic phone calls from the hotel after I sent an eamil to their head office in Berlin. They knew we were celebrating a special occasion- we had told them on booking and requested the most expensive grade rooms- but we weren't offered a glass of fizz or anything like that on arrival. I look at that in two ways: I got the impression that lots of people go there to celebrate occasions such as ours so they must be used to it but on the other hand it wasn't a cheap stay.
The room itself was immaculate - large with a super kingsized bed, great shower, free
standing bath, bathrobes etc- but the sea view wasn't great- you had to look past other parts of the building which did obsure it somewhat.
We had dinner on both nights as part of the package and both were delicious. I can't eat dairy and the waitress and kitchen saw it as no bother to make up a dessert plate with things I could eat. Likewise for breakfast, getting soy milk and gluten free toast was absolutley no problem. We had breakfast in bed both days for which there was no extra charge as you get at some hotels- plenty of coffee and tea on demand.
The best part of the stay was the completely relaxed atmosphere- no children are allowed and you were actively encouraged to laze about reading the papers and books provided. There were blankets and cushions galore and we spent most of Saturday afternoon lazing about in the spa in dressing gowns with mugs of herbal tea.
The woodfired hot tubs are definately worth a try- just to look at the view.
We did leave feeling completely rested and thought the hotel was efficent with friendly, can do staff it was a LOT of money and although there were no particular faults with any aspect, I did go away wondering if it was worth the nearly £800 it cost for two nights.

I would reccomend it to a friend who had an accasion to celebrate or who needed a complete break from it all weekend.

A fantastic experience. The food was very good and I have a Gluten Free diet which they were amazing with-adapted everything,Gluten free Bread (home made)made the whole dining experience a pleasure for a change. Jasper the hotel dog is totally gorgeous-Take him for a walk on the beach in the morning.Book restaurant early as its very popular. Champagne in the hot tubs is good fun with fab views. We stayed in rm 20 which was fantastic but rm 21 would have even better views.
The staff are so friendly and relaxed but efficient. We visited the Eden project during our stay which was well worth a visit and if you want a good lunch and a pint Rick Steins pub in St Merryn isn`t far away and has great food and good atmosphere.
Had a wonderful time and hope to go back soon!

The Scarlet is, as per many of the other reviews on here, simply fantastic. Rather than repeat what's been said, I hope to add a few points:
1. Reception - as noted there isn't a reception desk. However, staff are always on hand to help with any request. We never had to wait more than a minute.
2. Service - I'd like to call it relaxed. The staff are very friendly and will always stop and chat (if you want them too!). This means that you may have to wait a few minutes to be served in the bar or restaurant. However, the raison d'etre of this hotel is to chill out and unwind.
3. Food - we stayed for five nights; the menu changes daily, but often with the same base ingredients (i.e. they might offer Monkfish on 2 x consecutive days, but prepared differently). I'm not a big seafood fan, but was very happy with the choice 2 x meat dishes plus a vegetarian offering every day. (There is only 1 x veggy offering, so non-meat-eaters be aware). We had reason to return a steak one evening - no problem. Both main courses were taken away and fresh meals brought out. We were also offered a complimentary drink for the trouble.
4. Hot-Tubs - If you do NOTHING else whilst at The Scarlet, book a session in the seaweed-infused hot-tubs overlooking the ocean (champagne not mandatory, but highly recommended !) NB - we booked the 1st session of the day; obviously the tubs are filtered, but how would you feel about getting into someone else's bath-water?
5. Spa - The 4-hour "journey" is fantastic.
6. Jasper - Take the hotel dog for a walk - he's great fun (and very well behaved).
7. Rooms - We stayed in one of the "Indulgent" Rooms which was very large and funky. These rooms have varied views of the beach, so ask before booking (we were in room 11; the one below us had a limited view).
8. Price - it's not cheap. We averaged £500 per night based on the highest grade of room, spa treatments, dinner and wine. However, the standard rooms still have great views and you choose how much you want to spend on booze. Overall, I think that it was worth every penny. I hope that you enjoy the hotel as much as we did.
PS - I wasn't aware until we got there that The Scarlet is for over-18's only. No kids allowed was a bonus.
PPS - The hotel is on a cliff on the Cornish Coast. You will get NO mobile phone reception / there is no Wi-Fi. Again, for us a bonus ! (You can get a hard-wired ethernet connectivity in your room if the world really does require you to be on-line !)

A lot of what I'll say has been written before. This place is great for couples or friends looking to get away from it all.

It is a new hotel, only been open a year or so. From the moment you arrive the views and design of the hotel hit you. The hotel has been designed to allow coastal and sea views from almost every part . Great care has been taken with the design and interiors, which all work wonderfully to make The Scarlet feel like a special place.

The Scarlet doesn't feel so much like a hotel, more like a club. Everyone seems to have the same idea - to get away from it all and chill without kids for a few days in stunning surroundings.

The spa and pool area is great and the restaurants offers excellent food (breakfasts and dinner included in some packages). You really can't ignore the fact that the food is of a superb quality and the choice is great too. Full marks to the restaurant.

Throughout the hotel there is a calm and relaxed ambience. Whilst the hotel was full the weekend we were there it never felt crowded and there is lots of open public areas you can sit and read a book and newspapers or have a drink. The place has a warm and inviting homely feel.

The rooms are unique and unlike any other I have stayed in, with open plan shower, sinks and bath tub all in the one room and not in a separate bathroom, bar the toilet which is. The bed is very comfortable and the views are excellent. Expense has not been spared on the quality of the rooms. The only criticism I would have regarding the bedrooms is that I was surprised for a hotel which is so contemporary, modern and new that they left out iPod docking stations? Seems like a obvious gadget to include in the rooms in today's age and in a hotel of this quality and something I would recommend they address.

The staff are personable and polite but the only area for slight improvement is that service could be a little quicker at times (especially in the restaurant) and on a few occasions we had to ask for something twice or three times. Aside from that and the pillows on the bed being far too soft, in my opinion, the hotel is outstanding and I would really recommend!

I hope to go back as I had an excellent stay! Highly recommend this place; you'll have an excellent stay!

We own the 5 star Eco Cottages at Mawgan Porth just over the way from Scarlet, and naturally insist all our guests try Scarlet, a: for it's closeness to our accommodation (no need to get in the car),b: for its Eco-ness and c: for its Luxury and general lovely-ness. We have been there for Lunch once before when it first opened, and it was very nice, but we thought we'd better try the evening Dinner ourselves, especially as we rave on about it so much to all our guests, friends and family. Its a shame that Scarlet have had some negative comments on here, teething troubles I guess as I can honestly say that our
Dinner experience was fantastic. The Staff were very friendly and attentive, continuisly asking if everything was ok with our meal, topping up our glasses, re-folding our napkins if we left the table momentarily. The quality of the food was faultless, nicely and neatly presented, (our imediate thought was that the starter looked small, but this meant the edge was not taken from your appetite for the next two courses) the taste was superb and very reasonably priced at £39 per head for three courses. The Restaurant was positively buzzing, very full which was nice to see in October, when things usually quieten down. It was commendable that the service did not falter even though the restaurant was running at almost full capacity, there were plenty of staff on hand, and even at one time apologising for the wait between starter and main course, when in actual fact we hadn't even noticed. Theres nothing worse then rushing the courses and being chased off your table for the next sitting, thankfully something that we didn't experience here. So there you go, we shall continue to 'rave' on about Scarlet forevermore, and intend to treat ourselves more often !
We feel very lucky to have Scarlet on our doorstep !

The views, scale and location just don't come across on the website, it takes your breath away when you enter The Scarlet, the view out to sea and the cliffs are amazing.

The hotel is very relaxing and filled with bright colours and beautiful art, sculptures and the best lighting I have seen, it's beautifully done. The sitting room areas are very chilled and each one has a different feel, the outside lounging area is great, large seats, big cushions and large blankets if needed.

The restaurant has great service and delicious food, I liked the way breakfast changed each morning.

The spa smelt wonderful, and the treatments were lovely, the hanging pods were very relaxing (and fun!) I will definitely return for more time in the Spa. We did have an outside seaweed bath in the tub overlooking the sea as the sun set!

We enjoyed a walk along the Coastal Path to Jamie's Fifteen restaurant which was worth doing, it took just an over, and then very easy to get a taxi back to the hotel.

We will definitely return ....
