“Great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

What a lovely place, well appointed and modern feel. Spa was good size, we didn't have treatments but used the pool, steam room, relax room- top tip..ring in advance and book an out door hot tub session! Breakfast was a treat, great local food cooked well.
Didn't gave dinner, visited no6 in Padstow- 20 mins in a cab.

It was great to read that you enjoyed your stay with us - and good of you to post such a kind review of your time here. I agree that our breakfast is the perfect way to start the day, especially with the ocean as a backdrop! We hope you can come back to stay again soon.

Booked the Scarlet for new year for the second year running. It wasn't a let down. Just as great as the last time and the 3 dy package they arrange for their guests is excellent. Room 22 was superb. The view is amazing. Highs were the hot tubs on the cliff, relaxing in the spa areas and the lounges and the breakfast / day time food. The environment too is out of this world - an amazing coast, sand, cliffs and sea waves that have to be seen to be believed. There are lots of activities if you want them. We are a bit private so didn't join in many. I missed to tea and cake that was available every afternoon last year, but you can have tea when you want and this is delightful. The only tweak required to make this place a heaven, is the evening food. It's fine dining, yes, but the portions are tiny and the chef seems to hate carbs. We had to fill up on bread as the meals are beautiful and tasty, but tiny. Expect the ubiquitous ' skid mark' of sauce on the pate and a post it note sized piece of fish. Ceps and gnocchi means spot the Ceps and gnocchi ( expect 3 pieces) . It made us laugh. I'm sure some of my fish could have lost this much flesh and survived to swim away:) . Bit too much binge - watching of masterchef professional in my view. After 10 mile sea walks something more honest humble and carb inclusive is required. It can still be fine dining!
Still, it was all fantastic and once of the best hotels in the world in my view.
We love it's adult only exquisite peaceful ambiance in an otherwise noisy world.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to review your stay with us, and I'm happy that you felt that you had a 'six star' start to the new year! It sounds like you really could make most of our beautiful coastline here, too, which is breathtaking at this time of year. Thank you also for your comments with regards to the kitchen, which I will pass on to our head chef for you. If you have any further comments please don't hesitate to contact me and we hope to see you again very soon.
Kindest regards

We have just returned from an excellent Christmas at the Scarlet. Loads of delicious food, wine and cocktails. The atmosphere is so relaxed, the staff so friendly. We used the Spa and received excellent treatments.
Go there if you want a stress free and relaxed Christmas. I can say no more, other than GO! Not just at Christmas, it’s great at any time of the year.

Room Tip: For a sea view get a room on the cloister garden level. The hotel is also dog friendly.

How do you blend 'homey & 5 star divine'? The Scarlet does it with ease. This is a review of the Christmas period 2013. Arrived 23rd and left 27th Dec looking for an alternative to an empty nest experience at home- we found it, thanks to our son and daughter in law who had experienced the Scarlet for a special birthday experience previously. Fellow guests were a mix of ages and stages in life. Activities were on offer but there was no compulsion to join in - the wet suit swim on Christmas morning was a winner, however with at least half of the guests taking part- a great bonding experience! The food was wonderful, the rooms spacious and modern- we were not in the most 'Indulgent' of rooms ( or rather suites) but were well satisfied by our 'spacious' room which overlooked the beautiful cove, with its very modern decor in line with the rest of the hotel. A total of approximately 63 guests, the place felt cosy and allowed the staff to get to know everyone by name. The Spa is worth a visit, too. We went on a Short Journey ( wonderful) in addition to two sessions in the cliff top hot tub. Quite simply this hotel experience is not to be missed and even though it is not cheap, it was worth every penny in our experience.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good! If you wish to splash out even more choose 'Indulgent' but all rooms...

What a wonderful way to spend such a special time of the year, and I agree that our bracing Christmas dip in the ocean, followed by hot drinks with both old and new friends is always a winner! Thank you ever so much for taking the time to post such a lovely review of your time with us, and we do all hope to see you again in the future.

As my wife would tell you, it is almost compulsory for me to find something to complain about in every hotel we have ever visited. The only exception being, thus far, the Reethi Rah in the Maldives. I am pleased to say that the Scarlet can now also be awarded the same accolade. It helped that we were upgraded to "the best room in the hotel" (Room 1) which instantly reduced the scope for any possible complaints! The room itself was huge with a lovely open-plan bathroom and massive windows opening onto a balcony and the most super view of the beach and sea. We had an excellent dinner in the hotel on the first night, a lovely 4 mile walk up the coast the next day and then our afternoon treat of a hot-tub at 3pm as the sun started to set on a gloriously mild December afternoon with a couple of drinks to add to the sense of perfection. The next day the weather really closed in with torrential rain and winds of 50mph. No matter: a splendid "wet walk" on the beach at Watergate Bay before spending the afternoon lounging around the swimming pool and steam room watching the rain lash down outside and the waves crashing on the beach below. The hotel itself is very peaceful and relaxed, so much so that it doesn't feel in any way inappropriate to wander through Reception in a towelling robe from the Spa to one's room. Two very small gripes: our bed was much harder than ideal and as a consequence we didn't have quite the quality of sleep we would have wanted and also the Eco side of things can be a bit of a bore - the lighting in the dining room isn't very comfortable at night with horrid lo-energy bulbs over some of the tables giving a very nasty glare. Also one night in the Bar I asked for a Margarita and was told it wouldn't be possible because the only Tequila of sufficient quality came from South America and that involved too much of a carbon footprint! The waiter who delivered this crushing blow did so with such charm and humour that it would have felt churlish to make a fuss and a special mention should go to the staff in general: in many hotels the staff are "professionally" friendly but in the Scarlet the staff are genuinely warm, helpful and cheerful and are a delight. All-in-all it is really is a very special hotel and we cannot wait to return.

Many thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful review. I am so happy that we lived up to your rightfully high expectations, and it was lovely to for the team to be awarded such accolade! I'm glad that you were able to make the most of both our spa and also our gorgeous coastline here, the scenery is a joy to behold in all weathers, I agree. I will be sure to pass on all of your feedback to the teams here, and very much look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Just spent 3 days and 2 nights here for our anniversary. Friendly, warm staff who like their jobs. Fantastic spa and a fun 'journey' treatment with my husband. I was worried it would be 'toe curling hippy stuff' but it was a laugh and totally relaxing. The facial I booked was one of the best I have ever had - not at all clinical - more of a holistic treatment. The most beautiful view of the sea from our 'Just Right' room every morning - with moonlight on the sea. Tea and coffee brought to our room. A hot tub in the dark, in gale force winds and with no need for a kagoule. My husband loved the 'meat' menu and I enjoyed some of the vegetarian food - especially the carrot and ginger soup. The wine listed was superb. We definitely want to go back next year (to recharge our batteries) - now we just need to work very hard to pay for it! PS Jasper, the hotel whippet, is gorgeous and kindly took us for a walk on the beach.

I've never felt compelled to write a review on anywhere before, until I stayed at the Scarlet. We splashed out as it was our wedding night and were a little nervous about spending what we thought was quite a lot of money on one night in a hotel. I can honestly say it was worth every penny. I'm not quite sure how they've done it, but it does feel like a home from home.

For a stunning hotel, there is no stuffiness or pretence. The staff are really friendly and helpful - they have the balance just right between being friendly and chatty but not over-familiar! The contemporary décor is a delight which really makes a feature of the incredible views from the place. The facilities (pool, hot tubs, light relaxation room etc) all helped us to feel ridiculously relaxed after only one night - it felt a little bit like being on retreat! It was also lovely not to be kicked out at check out time, and to feel totally welcome to continue to use the facilities for as long as we wanted.

We had dinner there which was delicious, plus the restaurant sources all their food as locally as possible and tries to work with seasonal produce. They also catered for my very awkward dairy free diet with no problems whatsoever, even providing a tasty dessert (if you're dairy free you'll know how great this is)! I can't even begin to describe the wine list...

Lastly, I loved the fact that the Scarlet is a gorgeous hotel but also environmentally friendly - they don't shout about this but it is constantly there at the heart of everything they do. The eco-ethos is one of the main reasons we picked this place, but what I totally love is the fact the place is cool and contemporary - being eco doesn't mean tie-dye and rainbows!

Thanks to all the staff for making this such a unique place. Now I've been once, I will definitely be back!
