My husband and I stayed at the Scarlet between Christmas and NY. A very special, and well needed treat for us both after a bit of a year. Our greeting upon arrival was very welcoming. The absence of a check in desk was actually really nice and made it feel rather homely. We were shown to our rooms even though we'd arrived much earlier than our scheduled check in which was great - it meant we could start relaxing straight away. After being shown our room, we were given a tour of the hotel and introduced to the spa as we'd upgraded our spa package as part of our stay. We were then offered drinks and time to relax before our spa treatment. And we did!
The artwork around the hotel was a really nice touch. Unfortunately, the piece we really liked was a commission and not for sale. Hubby was rather relieved about that!
The food was heavenly and portion sizes just right. I looked forward to breakfast overlooking the bay each morning and it was nice to feel we could take our time and not be rushed. The wine and drinks were on the expensive side, but, it was nice to have the opportunity to try some very, very, good English and Cornish wine, and appreciate that they are all natural or organic. We didn't lunch at the hotel as brekkie kept us going, but we did indulge in the chilli hot chocolate after our beach walks and an afternoon tea one day was heavenly.
We couldn't wait to get to the spa. We started off with a couples rhassoul on the first afternoon, which was great fun and really did set the scene for the rest of our stay. We came away feeling very relaxed and in good spirits.
The following morning we started our 'spa journey'. We had upgraded our included short spa journey taster to a longer one, which meant we had a longer consultation and a 90-minute treatment rather than a 45-minute one. Our journey started with a consultation based around Ayurvedic principles and was followed by our seaweed hot tub complete with a glass of bubbly! I'd been looking forward to this the most and wasn't disappointed. I can’t describe it - just try it!
We then had time to relax in the not-quite-so-relaxing relaxation room. The continuing sound of chairs and tables being scraped across the floor of the restaurant above put paid to any real chill out time. As did the squeaky door and footfall of staff continually walking through to the outside. We were then guided to our treatment ‘tents’. Just walking in was enough to relax me, but 90 minutes later after the most sublime treatments we’ve ever had, we were led to the deep relaxation room. We managed less than 10 minutes in here given the noise coming from above – I’m guessing the kitchen maybe? Sadly we were not the only ones who felt some soundproofing could be useful. It really did spoil what could have been the most idyllic way to end the journey. Realising the main relaxation room wasn’t going to be any better, we headed back to our room.
The indulgence of the 90min treatment was incredible. Both my husband and I, upon returning to our room, missed the wine tasting and nearly dinner that night. And the next day, we could barely put one foot in front of another. I’ve never been so close to falling asleep whilst walking! And the effects lasted for days. Our skin still feels soft and rejuvenated even now. But I’m not sure, given the additional £135pp for an extra 45 minutes treatment, in the less than relaxing immediate surroundings, would be justifiable a second time. Even the therapist couldn’t justify such a cost to another lady that was asking.
Our 'generous' room wasn't as generous as we'd been led to believe. Still plenty big enough for two, but it meant my rather skinny husband had to crawl across the (not kingsize!) bed to get in rather than being able to walk around it - due to the rather odd placement of a wall mounted TV! There wasn't the relaxing sofa and table we were expecting as described when booking, meaning nowhere to sit and relax or eat! That said, as the hotel offered plentiful lounge areas we didn't spend as much time in our room as we thought we might. We had been very much looking forward to waking up with the beautiful coastal light pouring in our room as recommended on our show around. However the corridor night light sensors would trip off and illuminate our room - not just occasionally but continually all through the night, so come 3am, I closed the curtains to try and get some sleep.
We would have liked to have somewhere to hang our (strangely well worn and rather threadbare) robes, towels and floor mat after using them as the only hook in the entire room space was used for our outdoor coats. Instead we had to hang them over the bath and dividing wall, which turned our room instantly into student digs. I loved using the gorgeous toiletries - the same as used in the spa and it was a nice touch to be able to take home the soap in a cute little bag. On balance, I just think we were just unlucky with our expectations of the room being mismanaged but our knowledge will be helpful if we decide to stay again. This aside, the room was nicely decorated and clean and the view was somehow better than we imagined.
All in all, our stay was a fabulous experience. By virtue of its location half of that is automatically achieved. It was a good rest and treat for our souls.
We would love to be able to not consider value for money and make it a regular, but it just didn’t quite hit the mark – and all because of a few small things. I’d like to think we might be back one day.
