“Mixed, second and last visit.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

We have stayed here for the last two years with our children aged 2 and 9. The first time we stayed in a golden oak, cabin 6 and had a great time. I would advise you pick your cabin number as well as silver or golden status as the location of where your cabin is on the site will determine your level of privacy.
This year we booked a silver cabin as the only difference is you don't get towels or a wii. Some silver cabins have log burners so it would be worth phoning the site to double check and save a substantial amount of money.
We arrived at site to find the cabin had been refurbished and was not ready. We where offered the choice of sharing our holiday home with work men or we could be upgraded to a golden cabin. We obviously took the upgrade . We woke the next morning to the sound of trucks drills and a lot of banging. In day light we could see all of the surrounding cabins where being refurbished. We had travelled over 300miles to stay on a building site. I could of cried!
We had to pack up and moved to another cabin which was on the other side of the side of the site. We packed and unpacked again and then found work men where starting in the cabin next door. I gave up on the thought of a relaxing family forest holiday.
The staff here are lovely and clearly felt sorry for us and embarrassed by the situation so much so that we have been offered a full refund.
The surrounding area is amazing, so much to see and do for adults and kids whatever the weather. Be prepared to spend a lot though! My advice would be ring the site befor you book. Check if there is any worked planned on site and also the specifics of your cabin.

Room Tip: Call the site first and have a good look at the site map. Choose your cabin wisely!

We stayed at Deer park early February as a group of 6 friends and had one of the best weekends ever. We picked Deer Park randomly and were certainly impressed by what we found. Yes there is no phone reception but this was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. I found the staff really friendly and helpful, we arrived early and they welcomed us warmly and even opened up the shop/cafe area for us to sit and wait before we checked in. Nothing was too much trouble and every staff member made the effort to go above and beyond normal customer service.
The lodge itself was great - really good quality and really clean. The bathrooms were excellent with nice hot showers. The hot tub on the deck was by far the highlight and one of the reasons we chose to stay here. We definitely were't disappointed - it was clean and hot and super relaxing!
We hired bikes one day and they let us keep them for the whole weekend for no extra charge which was a really nice bonus. There are some great cycling trails around the lodge and despite getting lost for a couple of hours we had a fantastic afternoon exploring the local area.
My tips would be definitely take lots of logs for the real log burner, especially if you are going in Winter, we used it a lot and it made the lodge feel so cosy! And also the standard things like dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid.
We decided to book for next year before we even left and will definitely be back! There are so many great areas of Cornwall you can explore from this base so I would definitely recommend it....can't speak highly enough!

I recommended a stay here for very dear friends from Worcester who wanted to visit us as we live in Cornwall but following a quick visit to see what the place was like we found that the area was so smelly due to the local refuse landfill only a few miles away we had the tell them not to bother.

It seems there had been yet another pollution incident there that the stream running through the site had become contaminated by leachate.

This is such a shame as the woods, cabins etc were in such a lovely setting it could have been a wonderful break for them

We stayed from Monday to Friday and would definitely go back again. There is obviously no phone signal/Internet as it is a cabin in the middle of the woods - somewhere that you choose to go to get away! The park is lovey, not too overcrowded and the staff were very friendly & helpful. The cabin was nice with a hot tub & log burner and nice sized rooms. It wasn't a problem for us, but there was only 4 of everything so could maybe be a bit of a problem for a family. Luckily there was a dishwasher which saved on the washing up! There were a few loo rolls & a dishwasher tablet provided, but nothing else - as you would expect from a self catering cabin holiday! The park isn't too far from most places in Cornwall so was a lovely few days away. The only downside was not being able to check in until 4pm and checking out at 10am, effectively taking away almost 2 days from our 5 day stay.
All in all, a lovely holiday and location, and will definitely be going back again!

Went to DeerPark with my partner and we absolutely loved it we had the Golden Oak cabin and it was brillant, had a great time. Staff were friendly and helpful, the place was delightful in the woods with a mill pond. We did the duck race which was good fun, the quiz, and did the nightwalk which was great and the instructor was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. My partner and I wanted a walking holiday and walked to a few places, we also hired bikes. The forest retreats sells amazing sausages and also delivers pizzas and sells other essentials and luxuries. Absolutely loved the time there, had a great hot tub, lovely thick towels, and robes. Only issue was we both slipped on the stairs to the lodge although there is a warning something on the stairs to the lodge to stop slipping would be great, and had to provide our own extra toilet roll as well as washing up liquid but you have to do that on other holidays anyway, other than that everything else was provided such as cooking utensils, towels, and might I add the bed and bedding was just perfect. Ignore comments from people that make totally ridiculous comments - you are in a forest obviously you don't have phone reception you go there to relax if your the kind of person that wants the laptop out and mobile phone don't bother because this wont be the holiday for you - but if you love an amazing forest location with friendly staff this is absolutely for you. Will definetly be going again. Not sure what the other cabins are like but would definitely have a golden oak again.

Room Tip: Treat yourself and book a Golden Oak

Great location-easy acess to beaches etc. The down side is you have to travel for phone reception.
This is our secondThe cabins are now starting to look tired. The kitchen is well equipped but you must remember that you only get four of everything.
The hot tub is a great plus. When packing don't forget dressing gowns and flip flops for the kids. If not the cabin gets
very wet. The towels are very thin so take a couple extra. . Hair dryers are not provided. The TV is flat screen but small and only receives the basic channels . So dvd's are essential . Take your library cards with you so that you can join the library in Looe as a visitor. The rent dvd's from £1.00 for a week.

we have been a few times with our children, who are 9, 12 and 20 plus partner, the children love it, the cabin number 16 was very warm and had a log burner! and jacuzzi! . Even though it was a pet friendly cabin (they are not all) it did not smell doggy. The place was clean, it was a bit tired, but nothing we could be disappointed in. we did an out of season deal for the weekend most cabins were booked. A bargain for peaceful nature and a beautiful woodland with lots of wild life. We saw many birds, while sipping good wine from the site shop, we heard owls while we were sat in the hot outdoor jacuzzi in the moonlight, (so that's why we missed the great deerpark duck race the next morning), in the morning we saw squirrels chasing one another through the tree tops and fish in the river which is a couple of metres away.
The staff were incredibly friendly, the new reception/shop/bar/cafe is great. Closes at 7pm though. We did not do any on site activities but did a great walk to a Celtic hill fort and also did a short drive to Polpero the a beautiful and interesting fishing village. The blue peter pub there was really nice and welcoming with a lovely vibe. We did a family horse ride/lesson at Polmartin riding stables 5 mins from the cabin, Jane the owner is a character! and the staff are very dedicated.
Home now but will be back.
