Second visit to the Ship last night and another wonderful evening. The food was fabulous - imaginative, unbelievably tasty, beautifully presented and very reasonably priced for the quality. Two of us shared a baked cambembert studded with garlic and rosemary, and our friends went for the baked smoked salmon on melon with citrus dressing (have you seen a grown woman trying to like a plate in public without anyone seeing?) and the crab salad. Our mains were similarly delightful - chicken wrapped in bacon, medley of fish and crab in filo pastry and steak with all the trimmings. Again all plates looked practically clean at the end - Greg's sauces are so tasty, it seems criminal to leave any. How we found room for pudding I'm not sure, but they rounded off the evening with style. I think the menu is just right - ample choice without being overwhelming, indicating that everything is freshly-prepared. Portion size is generous without being silly, and the plates are hot, hot, hot.
At £120 for 4 including pre-dinner drinks and wine, it seemed eminently reasonable. The Ship Inn is such a pretty place too - great atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful. Just so glad this place is down the road, which is another important indicator - they do very well all year from loyal local trade. Not many places around here can say the same.
