A group of 3 of us were in Hayle and looking for a simple evening meal when we happened on the fairly imposing looking White Hart. The menu displayed showed a reasonable selection of typical pub type meals so we thought we'd give it a go. Big mistake!
We arrived at about 7.45 pm and were directed to the rather gloomy and drab restaurant which had one other couple in it. Fair enough we thought, at least it shouldn't take too long to get our food. A pleasant enough lady took our order which included two requests for the chicken and mushroom pie. Drinks came quickly enough, but 10 minutes later, the waitress returned to announce the the chicken and mushroom pie was off - the kitchen was out of fresh chicken. OK, how about the fish pie then? Nope - no fresh fish either.
The fact that it took 10 minutes to find out that a dish was not available began to ring alarm bells that communication between the kitchen and front of house was not what it should be, but we thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt and placed orders for a straightforward sausage and mash and cauliflower cheese instead and sat back to wait and enjoy.
And wait, and wait. After around another 20 minutes, which is about the maximum time any pub grub should take to serve in a quiet establishment, we were told it would be coming in 5 minutes. And after 5 minutes had gone by with still no sign of food, it would definitely be with us in 5 minutes. When we had been sitting there for a total of 40 minutes after placing the original order still without anything turning up, I said we would pay for the drinks, but we were not prepared to wait any longer. A slightly irate chef appeared from the kitchen and announced that all the food is prepared from fresh ingredients and does take time. Sorry chef, but that's rubbish. A place like this should have a degree of prep for its main dishes and nothing should take longer than 20 minutes from order to service. If there is going to be a delay for some unforeseen reason it should be communicated quickly and honestly.
We went around the corner to Sanders fish and chip establishment and enjoyed excellent meals in their bright and cheerful eat in facility. After speaking to several locals later we learned that our experience at the White Hart was far from unique and it's well known in the area as a place to avoid, at least for food.
