On Thursday evening 5/22/08, my husband and I went to the restaurant on site at the Best Western Intercourse Village Inn.
After Kitchen Kettle Village closed, no one told us that finding eateries would be difficult unless one was willing to travel some distance. Most open eateries were far from where we were staying except for the Best Western Intercourse Village Inn and Restaurant.
We weren't thrilled with our choice, but, being unfamiliar with the town of Intercourse and the surrounding area at night, we reluctantly settled for their restaurant.
My husband ordered crab cakes. He thought his crab cakes tasted more like bread crumbs and less like crab. I tasted them and agreed.
I thougt I would try the pancakes. Our waitress said sometimes their pancakes were made too dark. So, I asked her if my pancakes could be made on the lighter side.
So, when our waitress went to their pick-up window to get my pancakes, they were already sitting there on a plate. And, I never anticipated what happened next.
I watched as their cook lifted my pancakes with his bare fingers, checked them, and dropped them back on the plate. This was after the pancakes had already been on the plate so it didn't make sense why he was handling them with bare hands when they were already on the plate. The only thing that occurred to me later, was that our waitress must have reminded him that I wanted my pancakes lighter.
I also know that our waitress had also seen what he had done cause I overheard her say to him: "What are you doing?"
Since I was close enough to hear some of their conversation, I also heard him tell our waitress, "This is my food. I can do what I want with it." --So, I figured that he was going on dinner break and making the pancakes for himself.
Then our waitress picked up the same plate of pancakes and delivered them to me. I was stunned. And I refused to accept them.
Even though I heard our waitress ask their cook "Why are you doing that?" (meaning: why he was handling food with his bare fingers when it was already on the plate,) our waitress still "feigned" surprise that I didn't want the same pancakes she wanted to leave on our table. And, she asked me: "Why I would want to return my food?"
I told her I had seen the cook touch my pancakes with his hands and that it was unsanitary. Only then did she admit that he had touched the top pancakes but then she said: "But he didn't touch all of them!" So, again, I refused to accept the same plate.
Then she went back to the kitchen, on her own, and placed another order. I know this because she returned to our table, saying: "I placed another order."
I couldn't believe when she acted surprised that I didn't want pancakes or anything else that their cook made.
Only then did our waitress admit that their cook had touched some of my pancakes but--to quote her--"He didn't touch all of them!" Then, she asked me to eat the pancakes that he hadn't touched!! Again, I refused.
So, after we paid for my husband's food, I attempted to speak with their manager but apparently he wasn't available that evening. So, I left the details of this situation with the woman working at their hotel desk, along my name and cell phone number but I never heard from their manager.
As a result, I went hungry that Thursday night, despite driving a distance and searching for an open eatery in Intercourse and surrounding areas. Most eateries apparently close up way too early.
