Owner description: Visiting Strawberry Hill is a truly theatrical experience. On approach to the building it is immediately apparent from the whitewashed walls and crenelations that this is no ordinary stately home. Once inside the visitor will find the rooms magically lit by a unique collection of renaissance glass with a gloomy castle-like hall and grey gothic staircase leading dramatically to the magnificence of the gallery and state apartment. Between 2007 and 2010 the structure of the building was saved from ruin and thirteen of the most important rooms were restored. Now a new grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has allowed us to restore five additional rooms through 2014 for opening in March 2015. As work progresses this year these additional rooms will on occasion be open for the public to view. As well as guided tours and self-guided visits, we also offer events and family activities as well as an excellent cafe and shop.

“Fairy tale meets fairy cake!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

Strawberry Hill House looks like a small fairy tale castle or a wedding cake you can walk into. Horace Walpole, son of our first prime minister, didn't care that much about accurate history; he was all about imagination, stories hinted at rather than told. At the time of writing, entry tickets are small booklets describing the rooms; these booklets are a great idea, useful at the time and sweet keepsakes for afterwards. Each room has a curator very ready to answer questions and tell stories about Horace and his house. The house is so pretty, the only disappointment might be that the rooms are almost empty; Walpole's collections are cherished and kept by Yale University. To me, the emptiness didn't detract at all, it just meant I could view the house clearly and enjoy its charm!

“Gothic House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

This "wedding cake" house built in 18th century by Horace Walpole is a charming way to spend an afternoon, great cafe on site too. This house is a work in progress and not yet the finished article.Lottery funding will help its further restoration.Rooms are a bit lacking in furniture and artwork, but staff very helpful and enthusiastic.

“Do What You Will”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Horace Walpole's 'plaything house' has been deliciously restored and sits within fanciful gardens. A wonderful place to enjoy the thrills of 'horrid tales' and observe the extravagant fancies of Mr Walpole. The restoration has been meticulously done and he would be amazed to see his 'paper buildings' still standing. I would recommend wandering round at your own pace. Our guide (on a guided tour) was so enthusiastic and had done his research so thoroughly he was eager to impart every last fact to us. This is a place of fun and fantasy and a little peace to absorb the atmosphere would be have been welcome- the art is to leave your audience wanting more...
Cafe delivered lovely food, charming staff, nice shop... go at once and as it quotes from Rabelais in the stained glass 'do what you will' there!

“Gorgeous Gothic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

To visit this house is a delight
Each room is a gem.painted in rich Gothic colours and brilliant gilding.
It is a fantasy which can be shared by all visitors the guides are so enthusiastic and informative,
Eager to share their love of the house but not intrusive.
There is a room with a short film showing the history and restoration of the house,a shop and a lovely cafe serving lovely lunches and delicious coffee tea and cakes.
My friend and I were so impressed by our visit at Open House that we decided to join Friends of the House, and look forward to future visits and to the varied events held there..
