“Emilys traditional sweets/ Simpsons chocolates”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Both these shops are run by a couple, they are fantastically friendly and helpfull and love a little natter. Both of them are happy to tell you about the history of Elsecar and the Wentworths and can answer most queries. I went on a Bank Holiday and the proprietor of the shops was providing a little entertainment by the shops with magic ballons and there was a facepainter too. They seemed to be the only shopkeepers that provided any form of entertainment over the lovely bank holiday weekend. The sweet shop is a wonder in itself and can be lethal to the pocket once you get inside as there is soooo much to choose from you cant stick with one or two things. In the chocolate shop there is a large screen that shows how and where cocoa beans are farmed and the process of chocolate making, Again a lethal little shop when addicted to chocolate as i am..... highly recommend the salted caramels and belgian chocolate cupcakes. These two shops are the reason i return .... afterall i do need to stock up on my goodies

“Heritage with no history!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

My father and I, having both been born in the village of Elsecar, visited the Heritage centre with great anticipation . My father is 93 and has a long history of relationships and associations with the village. I lived in the village till I was 20. We were pleased to see the workshops have been renovated and being put to good local use. But our biggest disappointment was, there is no history. And I mean none. The role of the Fitzwilliams, the importance of the coal mine to the community, the cricket club which over the years has won many Yorkshire championships , do not get one mention. It would appear it is a community centre not a heritage centre , if that is the case then I am happy for the current villagers as it provides wonderful facilities. But please do not advertise it as an Heritage Centre because it is NOT.
