“What a fantastic surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

On our way from Derbyshire to Yorkshire we just called by chance and discovered this lovely
completely restored little hamlet, with garden centre, nice clothing shop, beauty parlour and last but not least a very nice contemporary coffee shop/bistro with real food ambitions.
All premises are housed in lovingly restored stone houses with all major old features preserved.
Riley's at The Potting Shed offers a modern menu, and an extensive choice of hot drinks and a very well balanced wine list, nice choice of cakes and afternoon tea. Outside ice-cream parlour as well if you are on the go. Sitting outside in the lovely yard or inside under the old beams....and the whole at very reasonable prices. A wonderful gem for the whole family!
We enjoyed this experience fully, not to mention the lovely staff, and that much, we stopped on our way back! (There are also some very nice walks nearby to the old mining village)

“Won't return for breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

Went here as I had read previous reviews and thought it would be nice. However very disappointed, I ordered the poached eggs with bacon & hollandaise sauce on a muffin. I requested my bacon well done, but when it arrived it wasn't at all. Also I couldn't touch the poached eggs, they were more like boiled eggs that had just had the shell peeled off. When collecting our plates the waitress asked me if there was anything wrong and I advised about the eggs but she didn't comment, just took our plates and brought the bill. Very disappointing considering the price, would choose Rob Royds Farm Shop for breakfast over here any day, much nicer food, service and cheaper.

“Birthday treat gone wrong”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

I had heard good things about the potting shed; so i decided to take my girlfriend for a birthday lunch. It took over ten minutes to get seated even though there were only 2 other tables in the restaurant and the food, when it did arrive (sirloin sandwich) was tough and unenjoyable. Overall a bad experience from beginning to end!

“lovely food, great venue, good service and lots of parking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

The food is lovely, and Riley's hold regular Saturday evening events around wine-tasting or themed evenings. Very tastefully done.

The venue is convenient to any of the local villages, and is a pleasant drive from Sheffield or Barnsley, and is easily reached in 15 mins from the motorway.

There are additional attractions like having the gardening centre nearby for some shopping, and tons of convenient parking.

The building is fascinating with original aspects and a lovely stream running alongside with ducks and geese for the children to watch.

Rileys at the Potting Shed is perfect for a brunch, and it's worth getting in slightly earlier to avoid a wait at this popular spot.

“Friendly efficient service & good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

We have visited the owners previous restaurant Riley's at the Rose & Crown in Hoylandswaine for many years & are pleased we have found them again at the Porting Shed, a cafe during the day & restaurant by night.
The room has had a makeover with decoration & furnishings.
The menu is as it should be for fresh food, a choice of about 5 for each course. The wine list is in a similar vein, the BZ Sauvignon Blanc we had was perfect at £16.50 per bottle.
The food is well presented & fresh, & you can see the chef working in the open kitchen.
At the moment the restaurant is only open on Saturday nights and is definitely worth a visit.
