Having had a near death experience at a hotel not a mile away from this one (see my previous review), I inadvertently stumbled across this hotel again. I'd stayed once before but somehow overlooked it when looking at options this time. Never again will I do so.
The Alma Lodge is a small hotel with great rooms, which are clean and comfortably furnished. They're a little dated but that adds to some of the charm, and the service provided makes up for this minor niggle.
Explaining my plight and perhaps sensing the desperation in my voice (I jest), I called the property in the hope they had a double room. I was lucky to receive their last room for the night.
Arriving within minutes of making my reservation, I was promptly checked into Room 30, a small double room. I was advised a wedding party were inhouse that evening so it may be louder in the bar area. I appreciated this as some hotels would have ignored this fact in fear of putting off a guest, or giving them reason to complain.
The reception is a small welcoming area with a nice friendly bar off to one side and a beautiful open fire burning to the other side. Very ornate woodwork is the decorative style, and gives a real sense of a traditional English country hotel.
The room was, as I said, small, and slightly dated. However it was immaculately clean. Tea & Coffee making facilities are provided, information on local areas and a room service menu too. The bed was comfortable, everything you'd expect. It was very warm, but this was easily rectified by reducing the temperature on the radiator to suit us.
The bathroom too was very clean. My only criticism here would be the shower - very low water pressure, more of a trickle really. But this happens sometimes, and it didnt cause me enough inconvenience to warrant mentioning on checking out.
I will be staying here again for two nights in April, and fully expect the same warm friendly service, and comfortable nights sleep. A true wee gem, and somewhere I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a good standard reasonably priced base from which t explore Manchester and the great North West.
Rooms to the rear, away from the Conference Rooms are quieter.
