Donatello's is a family run restaurant in a recently re-furbished space in downtown Indiana. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and contemporary. But it is undeniably a long narrow retail space in downtown area. On the other hand, the food and service are excellent.
Parking can be a problem if you insist on parking right outside on the main road (metered/city parking/free after 7pm) but if you don't mind walking a few blocks, parking is plentiful (but still metered so bring quarters).
If it is a busy time (lunch/early dinner/weekends) and you are seated at a table in the back it can be noisy and feel very busy. The booths in the front of restaurant are quiet and private, however.
Also, they are not open on Sundays.
And now, the good news:
They serve lunch and dinner M-F and dinner on Saturday. The space is set up so it is quieter in the few booths in the front than in the back where they can seat large parties. There are flat screen tvs in the dining areas with scenes of Italy and appropriate music. There are two muted tvs over the small bar-- one with sports; one with news. Overall, the setting is warm and comfortable. The service is professional (difficult to find in Indiana) but also friendly. The wine list is not extensive but neither is it too pricey. There are daily wine-by-the-glass specials with interesting wines. They have a full bar.
The food is Italian but also varied. They have a separate lunch menu but have some dinner salads and strombolis on the evening menu-- including a vegetable one. There is a good number of appetizers including clams casino and mussels (yum!). Their entrees (we've had a few) are done correctly and are really tasty. But where they really shine is with their daily specials. Excellent, varied and always a bit different from what is on the menu. The butternut ravioli I had was the best I ever had. It was served with a variation on ratatouille (eggplant, zucinni, onion and tomatoes) that was superb -- the acidity complemented the sweetness of ravioli.
I definitely recommend Donatello's
