You know how sometimes you visit one of your very favourite restaurants and you catch it on a bad night.......well this was one of those. Normally the Running Horse is a great place to eat, but it was off-form tonight.
My wife and I arrived at 6.30pm for our pre-booked time, and we were shown to the worst table in the house, right next to the swinging (and very frequently used) kitchen door. This was despite the restaurant having several other free tables for two.
My wife then attempted to order a lamb roast dinner, only to be told that they had completely run out of roasts.....on a Sunday....despite adverts everywhere claiming that they serve roast dinners 'all day' on Sundays (it was 6.45pm), and that Sunday was a day of 'Roast and Relaxation' (presumably only until 6.45pm).
For starters we had scallops and black pudding, and the bubble and squeak with bacon. Both were really nice, especially the B&S which had a nice crispy top. For mains, my wife had lamb shoulder, and I had pork belly with mash and red cabbage. Both meals were generally OK - the pork belly was tender, the lamb was really well cooked, and the red cabbage with the pork was fantastic. On the negative side, the green beans were very undercooked (almost raw).
Tonight won't put us off, and we will be back soon. It's still a great place to eat, but it did not live up to its usual great standards tonight.
