This is the only pub in Marlborough in the 2013 Good Pub Guide. My wife and I ate there last week, having had a fascinating walk round the stones at nearby Avebury; both the pub and stones are well worth a visit.
This is a pub as it used to be - and as it should still be...a smiling landlady to welcome you, beer from the barrel and a pleasant, buzzy early evening atmosphere.
Food was good and plentiful:-
My wife enjoyed her whitebait and ham, egg 'n chips,
I had a prawn cocktail and a chilli con carne.
We both found helpings to be too big, we could easily have done without the starters and my prawns were cold and rather tasteless, other than that everything was fine.
Service was good but a bit slow. We ordered our food at 6.20, the kitchen opened at 6.30 but we were not served until 7.10. We weren't in a rush and the staff apologised for the delay, so no harm was done and at least it shows the food is freshly prepared.
One final point - it's nice to be treated as an honest adult! When we first went in we asked about food then ordered our drinks. The landlady suggested I ran a tab and all she needed was my surname...brilliant and none of this nonsense about having to hand over a debit/credit card.
