We went here with friends for a drink last week and were all very disappointed with the atmosphere and service. Initially the worst thing was the awful smell which made sitting in the bar impossible. We located to one of the quiet areas which although relatively free of smell was devoid of warmth. It is also truth be told looking a little tired. They bizarrely had lit the fire in the bar, which was suffering from the dreadful smell ( a blocked drain apparently), but not in the areas without the pong! We ordered a glass of £5 fizz which was flat and had to be sent back, and a pint whilst waiting for friends.
The fizz was replaced and when friends arrived I offered to buy the rest of the newly opened bottle. Not an unusual request and one which would preclude other clientele having a flat glass of fizz. This however resulted in a 5 min discussion between bar tender and bar manager, they even relocated at one point to the end of the corridor to be out of ear shot! Meanwhile I was left holding my nose in the pongy bar!
Up shot was that they wouldn't do this as it might mean the first glass for us would be free and the manager was not happy to do this! Slightly mean as I had at this stage just bought a bottle of red, several pints and now proceeded to buy another bottle of fizz. Overall spending was in excess of £70 purely on one round of alcohol. It also meant they now had a bottle of fizz happily going flat on a quiet (midweek) night, hey ho, initiative and engendering local loyalty obviously not this managers strong point.
The free olives we had previously had in summer time were also not forthcoming. At this point I was slightly peeved so asked for them and they did appear.
We decided not to stay more due to attitude of manager than the smell. Relocated to our local pleasant pub on high street which had fire lit and non flat fizz.
The hotel food may be nice although the brasserie menu doesn't seem to have changed in 3 years. The rooms are pleasant enough but they are not interested in atmosphere or encouraging local loyalty. Perhaps that is their marketing strategy. Maybe they are purely interested in the wedding groups and tourists. Had they have been more welcoming and attentive we would have spent the night chatting and drinking beside the fire. They also could have apologised or made light of awful smell but went for the ignore it and hope no one notices routine.. completely bizarre. Overall we won't be going back and that is a shame for both us and them.
