“lovely..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

Stayed at The Lamb for one night...The room we had was one of the rooms with a four poster bed, very clean room everything you needed was there. Staff all very welcoming and helpful. can't really say any more a pleasure staying there.
The only negative I can think of is that outside our window was some sort of motor running most of the night (Air con/fridge ?) it didn't stop us sleeping but just a little annoying.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay here and thank you for your kind words. The motor running is indeed the air conditioning for the rooms and unfortunately it is a necessity, but I am glad it didn't stop you having a good nights sleep. We hope to see you again soon.

I wasn't going to write a review but after reading the review below about the reviewer's fantastic Easter break I thought that I probably should.

Whilst The Lamb is indeed clean and tidy the housekeepers leave a lot to be desired, it is the first time in my adult life that I have not left housekeeping a tip. This is why - at 10am on Easter Sunday the two housekeepers got into an argument about the vacuum cleaners, this was after a lengthy mutual moan about the amount of work that they had to do, trust me, lying in bed with the pillow over your head whilst attempting a lie in you can still hear every single word that they say. So we get up and a while later housekeeping knocks on the door and says that they'll come back later and I say "We'll only be about ten minutes, thank you darlin' " (yes due to my estuary English I don't have a g at the end of the word!) and she stomps off saying "I am NOT your darling" fabulous customer relations there but maybe she thought I was being condescending, trust me I didn't mean to be.

But it gets worse, the following morning I go to pick up my cross and chain from the dressing table and its not there, my SO and I spend an hour searching our bags, all the drawers, all the cupboards, all our luggage but to no avail. Eventually we find the cross right under the bed, in the middle of right under the bed which is why we'd missed it first time around, the chain was nowhere to be seen. I have no idea how it got there, my best guess is that it was accidentally knocked off the dressing table and then pushed under the bed with the hoover, with the chain being vacuumed up.

No, I didn't complain, I was too upset and just wanted to leave.

There is an upside, Ross and Tania work extremely hard to ensure that everyone has a pleasant time and their work ethic is faultless. The menu, although limited, is excellent. Breakfast is lovely.

It's a shame that the housekeeping team lets them down, you can't appreciate a lovely clean and tidy room with world war three going on in the corridor.

Just returned home from a relaxing 4 days at the Lamb. Comfortable, remarkably quiet room, welcome log fires, excellent food, friendly staff, a credit to the company (thanks especially to Ross, Tania and David), very knowledgeable about food, drink and area. Very dog friendly, in a great location for exploring. Stourhead Gardens suberb. Excellent dog walking area around Alfred's Tower. Will certainly book again.

Room Tip: Rooms outside main building good access for dogs. Room 6 very quiet despite being on road side.

We had a comfortable one-night stay in this traditional inn. We opted for a four-poster room, which was a decent size, with a contemporary shower room (nice Neal's Yard toiletries), and tea and coffee-making facilities. The cozy bar area downstairs, with open log fires was very pleasant, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. They didn't rush us to finish our drinks after hours, so guests could relax by the fire until late. Earlier in the evening there was a nice mix of locals and guests. We ate dinner in the adjoining restaurant, which served fairly simple food done well, and the full Scottish breakfast in the morning was a rare treat. We used The Lamb as our base for visiting nearby Longleat, and we were happy with our choice.

Room Tip: Our room was on the first floor. I believe the bathrooms have been upgraded on this floor.

This place is ideal if you are a country lover seeking a little solitude with some home comforts after spending the last month like us living in busy South-West London.

We arrived to an easy "door stop" parking space, walked in a loved the place immediately, it is exactly what we wanted, a warm "pub like" bar with a roaring log fire, the smell of place was magical. Service was great, we were taken up to our four poster bed room efficiently, everything as expected with Scottish decor (part of the Boisdale group). The room was comfortable with a lovely bathroom (bath and standing shower), it had all the nice toiletries one would expect. All in all perfectly happy with what we had given the very reasonable prices.

The hotel/pub itself is what you would expect, fairly simple, homely with plenty of area to sit around playing games, reading or whatever takes your fancy by the fire. They were kind enough to ensure a large flat screen TV was put up for all the Six Nations rugby during our stay. The real winner here though is the food! Perfect menu with all the steak, beef, lamb, chicken, venison and meat you can shake a stick at and cooked very well, there is obviously vegetarian and fish options on the menu as well. Being a red wine lover the ample wine menu pleased us hugely and if you like your whiskys you're in for a treat.... its an endless choice. All in all food and booze wise it's ideal. Breakfast was also great, with more than generous portions and food on offer.

The village itself is very secluded with not a lot to offer, however with Bradford-on-Avon, Salisbury and Bath all very close by, general sightseeing and town life is available, there is also fishing, shooting, horse riding, canoeing and ample country walks and pubs within a short(ish) drive.

A perfect country weekend away.

Two roaring log fires and a whiff of burning logs beckoned us in on a very rainy cold and winters eve. That was a great start but it got better and better.

This lovely cosy 300years old Inn was a perfect English Hostelry with delightful furniture collect and selected with great care to enhance the experience of this delightful aged building.

We were not disappointed with our lovely room, again so well dressed with beautiful antique furnishings and a perfect bathroom generously heated by a towel rail that worked.

When we went down to dinner again were again impressed as we sat at the perfectly placed candle lit table for two right besides the crackling log fire surrounded by an interesting array of antiqufurniture and memorabilia. Our waitress was delightful, well informed and efficient. We munched on good quality bread whilst our dinner was being freshly cooked and when it came it was a treat. Their philosophy of ‘Keep it Simple’ paid off. I couldn’t resist good ol’ English Fish and chips which was outstanding. But I could have had other more upmarket Fish of the Day or I was very tempted by coq au vin pie – NOW there’s a first !

Breakfast was plain and simple too, cooked to order it was perfect.

WE had a lovely two night stay BUT woke to find 2” of snow atop our car and warnings of roads in Wiltshire and Dorset being blocked - making it ‘A TOTALLY DELIGHTFUL ENGLISH COUNTRY EXPERIENCE’ .

Perhaps one thing missing – ‘Mine Host’ the jolly Inn Keeper.

Room Tip: a range of rooms from standard to suites - we were right on the road - and the double glazing did it...

the room was nice but our four poster bed was creaky and the room was smaller than we thought it would be. We had great difficulty in getting the TV to work, there was no digital reception, however we were provided with a DVD player and DVDs, very pleasing service. The bathroom facilities were lovely but however slightly unclean - hairs in the tub!! Toiletries however - amazing quality!! We didn't sample the breakfast however we had an evening meal there, we found the food very good but slightly pricey and the waiter didn't know the menu as he had to go into the kitchen and check with the chef what went with what.
