Description: As the original Bistro in Devizes (established 2003) we pride ourselves on being true to the original concept - that is a small, family run establishment (usually with a chef owner) providing a menu that often features slow cooked, seasonal dishes. The setting is traditional in that it is informal, relaxed and cosy. However, we are known for food that 'tickles the tastebuds', is influenced by a range of cuisines and always has The Bistro 'twist" to it. Open both at lunch time and in the evening, we have the distinction of also running a cookery school, now known as Vaughan's Kitchen and operating from another location in the town. Committed to sharing a passion for good food, Chef Peter Vaughan is a member of the Academy of Culinary Arts and of the Slow Food Movement.

“Fabulous meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

This was my first visit to The Bistro and I was very impressed with the whole experience. The waiter was very keen to inform us about the dishes on the 'Cuisine of Southern Spain' menu for January, and advising on wines. It was a Saturday night, we were a party of 10 and were seated in the basement. We all had Tapas starters and 3 different main courses between the 10 of us. I had the Andalucian style free range pot roasted chicken in saffron and sherry which was delicious, followed by equally tasty doughnuts with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream for dessert. We were not hurried, and had a very enjoyable evening. It was very reasonably priced for the standard of food and will definitely be returning again. Thoroughly recommended.

“Special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

Visiting Devizes for the weekend and needing somewhere to eat, we came across this lovely little restaurant. What drew us in was the fact that they had a Spanish speciality night running - what a perfect way to end a busy Friday! Going in with high expections, we were not disappointed for one second.
The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and weren't over your shoulder every minute like in some establishments. We ordered the food and drinks, swiftly a plate of spanish style homemade bread appeared with some dipping bowls of olive oil and also a homemade paprika aeoli which was a delicious way to begin the meal.
Then for the tapas starter. A symphony of different flavours that wanted me going back for more, especially the patas bravas and the spanish aubergine compote.
Once cleared, our mains arrived in good time. I had chosen the chicken dish and my husband chose the fish dish which tonight was fillets of gurnard, being informed that they had been freshly caught that very morning. The chicken was so moist and flavourful with a tasty rice dish accompaniment. My husband's gurnard was beautifully presented and cooked to absolute perfection.
We couldn't manage a dessert after filling up on all of the treats that preceded it but we had some lovely coffees to finish.
The bill came to around £55 pounds for the two of us which i feel was brilliant considering the high quality of food.
When we are back in Devizes we will most certainly be heading back to this restaurant and we will spread the word back up in Macclesfield.
Thank you for a lovely evening and keep up the good work!

“Lower than expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

Having read the good review and decided to give a go.
It was a Caribbean food night. The starters were good from the presentation to the tastes.
But it went down from there.
The main course tastes the same with all sweet and sour favor.
The deserts were the worst.

Good service anyway.

“A Bistro Experience..??”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

We were a "smallish" party of around 13 people, all welcomed to a friendly atmostphere. The staff were curtious as one would expect from a small restaurant, with a reputation for being one of the better places in town.
However, I fail to see how a place of this supposed standard has the audacity to serve a hot main course which has clearly been on the "hot plate" for a considerable length of time. Surely when one decides to eat in a restaurant, one should expect freshly prepared food on a plate when it arrives at your table. Although the cost of this dinner was by no means over-inflated, we were still paying for a plate of food that we expected to be fresh, not a congiled pile of potatoe dressed with what I can only presume was duck, "well-done"...!!!!
This must surely be addressed by The Bistro.
A great shame....
