As mentioned previously, I am not a fan of 'olde world' hotels but it is difficult not to be charmed by Castle Combe village or the Castle Inn; you half expect to see Miss Marple strolling down the street or find Captain Hastings enjoying a ' quick snifter' at the bar!
This has to rate as one of England's prettiest villages; it is so completely unspoilt with beautiful little cottages of all shapes and sizes, no mobile phone signal, traffic noise or intrusive street lighting. You can pretty much bank on a peaceful, relaxing stay.
The Castle Inn is in the heart of the village and has heaps of plus points including attentive and genuinely friendly staff, a well-stocked bar as well as the opportunity to enjoy the sheer prettiness of the place with outdoor tables on the street.
The evening meal was good 'posh pub grub' but a tad mean on portion sizes and ambitious on the billing front. I had a good-ish steak, cooked rare as requested, but it was too small and a green side salad, a few more fries and a choice of mustards should have been delivered for the price being asked. My colleague felt much the same about his Steak and Kidney Pie; tasty but lacking in quantity and just a wee bit over-priced.
Having stayed at the Castle Inn before I was hoping to avoid a room towards the back of the place which is a rabbit warren and cursed by low celings, sloping floors and gurgling plumbing. Thankfully, I got a room at the front of the Inn this time and was treated to a four-poster bed, huge bathroom and a fantastic view of the Church. Almost perfect.
Breakfast at the Inn was first class. They have a lovely, spacious and bright breakfast room and there's always plenty of good coffee and chilled fruit juices. The cooked options are very good, especially the scrambled egg and smoked salmon with lots of hot toast. Portion sizes are just right and feel less stingy as well.
Do everything you can to get a room at the front of the Inn for the best space and facilities. Towar...
