“We had a great time!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

We have just spent two wonderful nights at this lovely hotel. Our room was a delight - spacious, comfortable and with interesting individual features. The staff were thoughtful and knowledgeable and generally very committed to ensuring that guests were made to feel welcome and cared for. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals in the Bybrook Restaurant and the overall setting of the hotel is idyllic. It was peaceful and relaxing to spend time in the beautifully maintained grounds surrounded by mature woodland. Our only negative comment was that the housekeeping was not quite up to standard as our bathroom was not cleaned during our stay with the waste bin not emptied and basin surrounds not wiped down, however, this did not detract from the enjoyment of our stay.

I could write a story about this place but today you get the short version.
Wonderful golf course in superb condition; tough test but not punishing. Superb staff with good attention to detail. Great facilities and well maintained. Good food that is well cooked and served with a smile. Friendly members that invite you into their world.
TOTALLY recommend and will return; in fact I'm going back next week.
A piece of advice regarding the golf. This is a long, long hilly course but if you can manage to walk round it is so much better.

Room Tip: Walk the course - this review is about the golf, not the hotel. I was told the hotel is just as good...

We have just come back from a two night stay here on a Secret Escapes deal. What a wonderful place. We didn't know anything about the area having booked on a whim to celebrate a birthday but found it to be picturesque and peaceful (and oddly familiar - soon realised how many films it has been used in). The hotel staff were really friendly, some delicious cupcakes and a card had been left up in the bedroom as a birthday treat.

The bar staff were very helpful and happy to make anything you wanted off menu. The only improvement I would make in the bar would perhaps be to have some low MOD or classical music playing in the background just to mask other people's conversations a little.

The restaurant food was delicious and surprisingly filling.

All in all a delightful and peaceful stay.

Had the room above the entrance - it was fantastic with window seats, four poster bed and bath in the bedroom. We upgraded our break to include The Bybrook restaurant which was fantastic. Only stayed one night - would love to go back for a couple.

Stayed here to celebrate a 30th birthday and was not disappointed. From the drive down, the hotel is everything you expect from a country retreat. Despite there being a wedding on the hotel staff do not neglect the needs of their other guests. We stayed in a delux guest room which had fantastic views of the grounds. The room was comfortable and had everything you needed. The pillow menu is a nice touch. We dined in the Michelin starred restaurant which was a fantastic experience. With the exception of one staff member, all other staff were attentive and made dinning a real experience. Although the hotel price is on the expensive side, I would say you get the quality and service expected. From the complementary cupcakes, iced birthday greeting and well wishes from the staff, you are really made to feel special. We had an amazing time and would definitely return in the future.

We arrived expecting a great room and an amazing bathroom as promised on the website. We were also excited at the prospect of spending a relaxing evening in a Michelin starred restaurant. We were disappointed on all levels. Our deluxe room was strange and musty smelling with a very odd bathroom configuration which included a bath that faced the opposite direction to the television so unless you wanted to have the taps in your neck the only way to watch the TV in the bath was to turn your head 180 degrees. Not ideal to say the least! There seemed to have been no thought put into the design of the room. In the bedroom the huge four poster bed creaked every time you moved so was not particularly restful. Room service was disappointing and they had to come up three times before we had what we had ordered. Turn down service was a joke in the evening as the bed was not remade but the covers just flicked back and the room was not tidied, the water was not replenished and the glasses were not taken away.
We thought things could not get much worse until we went down to dinner! The service was appallingly slow and the food was a real let down. Having eaten in many Michelin starred restaurants we had never been disappointed until this point. Many of the courses were overpowered by a strong acidity and the serving staff were arrogant and unfriendly. As a previous reviewer has mentioned the napkin presented as a cracker was very irritating especially when it was waggled at me while we were in the middle of a conversation. In the end we could not wait to leave the restaurant as we had been there so long eating mediocre to poor food. There were many other bored looking guests. They have got to sort this out as there is no doubt that with this sort of offering they will not retain their Michelin status.
We were relieved to leave the hotel until we discovered that the valet parking meant that our car had been left unlocked all night. We will not return to this hotel.

Dear mcac,

Thank you for your recent review and for your forthright comments.

I am very sorry that there appear to have been so many issues with your stay and that we seem not to have been able to look after you properly.

Your comments about the bedroom and bathroom are disappointing, especially as this was the room that was allocated to you after your specific requirements were discussed with our reservations team. You are absolutely correct in reference to the bathroom and we are in the process of repositioning the TV.

I am also sorry that you did not enjoy your dinner, and we can only be reassured in the fact that we have just retained our Michelin Star for the 6th Year. The second comment about the napkin presentation has forced us to ensure we present the napkin in a more traditional manner, in the hope that this is what guests are looking for.

Once again we fully appreciate your candour and if you would wish to discuss the matter further please do not hesitate to contact me - sbrowning@exclusivehotels.co.uk, or I do have your details and would be delighted to correspond with you further.

Best regards,

Stephen Browning

We have stayed a number of times at the Manor House but not for a few years.
It is a beautiful hotel ,in a magnificent setting.
On opening the door of our room there was a musty damp smell. The bathroom had a shower head directly over the bath but no shower screen . The rug on the wooden floor was soaking wet and when turned we turned it over there was mould on it and the floor .This was where the smell was coming from.
The restaurant in the evening was excellent , except for the cheese that was served in a 'heap' which made identifying them extremely difficult.
Breakfast was very poor, the fruit salad was mainly sliced apple, and when I asked for bacon , one rasher arrived on a plate ! 3 tea bags and a pot of hot water was tea for 2 .
The staff all worked hard but at no time were you made to feel that you were a valued guest , a shame because it was that feeling that made the hotel so special in the past

Dear Fiona B,

Thank you for your feedback from last weekend. Needless to say we have taken steps to rectify the comments you made and for that we are very appreciative.

The rug in question has been removed and the flooring has been cleaned. I know the kitchen and restaurant team are disappointed with your comments, but take on board your constructive feedback.

I do hope you will give us a chance to make amends another time, and very much look forward to seeing you again.

Best regards,

Stephen Browning
