We popped into the george for a bit of cheap and cheerfull dinner after finding the place quite quaint in the afternoon. Nothing complex was ordered, mixed grill for the misses and a blue steak for myself, with two alterations, no mayo or coleslaw for the misses (easy enough) and i requested Aioli instead of butter on my jacket potato, this is where it all went wrong. The owner, not sure what Aioli was asked the chef to come over. "Not a F@%KING chance mate, this is a pub" was the response, a simple no or 'i can offer garlic mayo' would have been suffice. The chef then stormed back off too the kitchen. Brushing this off as a slip off the tongue we took our drinks to our seats and waited. The service was quick but mayonaise was present on her salad so we sent it back for plain salad, no biggy. My steak was over seasoned and the fat left on a blue steak, but i was paying £11 for a 10oz rump...i'm a big boy, i'll live. In the time it took to replace her salad (some 5 mins had passed), and return the plate too the table, tiny little curly hairs had appeared on her food. Now it doesnt take a genius to work out what had happened in those five mins but the chef obviously thought he was ground breakingly funny and clever. I returned two full meals to the bar, and after a quick discussion with an apologetic owner, a full refund was offered and we we're on our way. Overal the staff were friendly and polite, but were let down by poor kitchen control and a chef who had clearly had his lunch money stolen that morning.
