“Very good lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Had a saturday lunch here. The menu was varied, the food was excellent, well presented and the portions very good. The hotel is in a beautiful position overlooking Illkley. Nearby there are some lovely walks over the Dales. The staff were friedly and accomodating. Overall this was very good value for money. The restaurant here is evidently very popular so I would book ahead if possible to avoid disappointment.

Used to eat here on occasion when visiting my folks, decided to eat here today with them, my elderly grandmother and boyfriend as we were visiting from London and know the views are to die and normally have been very impressed.

Unfortunately we were not in for the lovely family meal out we had expected. On ordering our food at 1.30pm we were told it would be 30minutes for the food to arrive. 3 people in our group had ordered soup and this came at about 2.10pm. Fine only 10 mins later but this had clearly been microwaved so not sure why it took so long. 20minutes later the soup bowls had still not been cleared and we had no mains, as it had been an hour I went to the bar and asked where our order was. I was told 'yours will be next out', 15 minutes later still no mains and many other tables served. asked another member of staff, 'yours is being plated up now' 10 minutes later Grandma very hungry now as its approaching 3pm! Dad went to discuss with the bar and was approached by the manager who told him that he 'appeared wound up'. Dad understandably found this quite upsetting and came back to the table...more waiting...still no food. Manager comes over again and apologises, seems he was not aware of quite how long we had been waiting and food finally arrives.

All clearly microwaved and boyfriend's toad in the hole cold and sent back - he had now surpassed hunger so couldn't be bothered to wait for another. Food was fine, nothing special and not worthy of an almost 2 hr wait.

Massively disappointed with service, attitude of staff and food quality. After various discussions with the manager it was agreed we would not be paying for the meals, fair credit to him at this point as he seemed genuinely upset we had a poor experience but looking around the pub it seemed service was slack and slow at best. This needs to be addressed as we certainly will not be returning for a long while and I am sure other disappointed customers will feel the same.

Our room was great, and the pub fire was already lit when we went down for breakfast. 'Breakfast is absolutely free! Eat all you want!' the publicity said. No - breakfast is included, otherwise the tariff would have read 'room only'. Breakfast consisted of one variety of fresh fruit (tinned pineapple), some individual yoghurts, raisins and dried apricots, and masses of white bread - not very fresh white bread, with a toaster. Apart from little cartons of marmalade etc., there were individually wrapped cheese blocks that felt like erasers. I opened a pain au raisins thinking the wrapper would have kept it fresh, but it was heavy and solid.
I don't understand what a place that runs on high standards in other respects has to gain by being so mean on the breakfast. Apart from that - good.

Room Tip: First floor rooms have the views.

I eat at the Cow and Calf from time to time. It is part of the Vintage Inns chain with a set card menu and a few specials . Visited on 28.09.2012. Usually a decent selection of cask ales but only two were available. No real reason was given for the shortage. The service was poor, there appeared a shortage of staff and unusually the place was quiet for a Friday evening. There were three adults in my party and I ordered a mixed grill priced at £14.95. When it arrived, the rump steak was very overcooked, certainly not as requested. To be honest the whole plate looked rather tired and unappetizing. I returned the meal whilst my two fellow diners ate their meals(which were acceptable). One member of my party ordered a dessert and it took 30 minutes before it appeared. At no point did any member of staff visit our table to ask the customary "Everything alright". The location of the Cow and Calf is a lovely moorland place with fine views and the place itself is a nice old building well maintained. The accommodaton available is part of the Innkeepers lodge but we just ate there. I will visit the Cow and Calf again, I just hope things improve next time. I did pay my bill, but I did voice my concerns to staff at the time. Perhaps it was just an "Off Night".

This place is really special to me and my partner as we got engaged her and so we regularly visit. We have stayed over in the b&b once and have eaten here many times. The food is gorgeous, full of taste and the service is excellent. It's perfect for chilling out after a lovely walk on the moors opposite the pub. Definitely one to not miss!

After walking up the hill from hell,we reached Ilkely moor but could go no further (We are from central London). Collapsed into the Cow and Calf decided not to send for medics, but had lunch instead. The lunch menu £6 and a further £2 for a sweet. The food was cooked to a high standard and served so professionally. Chicken with lime mayonnaise and watercress was delicious.
After lunch they phoned for a cab back to town (£3.50) My advice is get one up the hill, stuff
walking on Moors and enjoy a great lunch. Yorkshire at its best.

Good food, friendly service, a good selection of local beers in a great location with amazing views make it worth the visit...

Nothing more to add - this bit is here because you have to write 200 characters...
