“Hmmm......”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

Here's the plus side: The room was nice, modern and fairly priced. I remember a young lady who worked behind the bar (small girl with brown, bobbed hair) She provided a fantastic and friendly service. There were nice touches too - such as a few olives with a large glass of wine.... Impressive at first....

Now onto the down side: It was over a year ago when we went - but I never thought to leave a review - until now! One of the owners was a nice girl although liked to exaggerate; claimed to own the building but her partner - who I believe is the main business owner said it was rented. Erm, okaaaay! The oldest of the two seemed very nice at first (mainly because of her honesty with renting the building!) but after she got a few drinks down her, she became a little strange. At the end of the evening she went to bed before us. It was not particularily late. We were chatting to friends and we did laugh every now and again - but we were not inconsiderate or loud at all and we moved to the other end of the building to ensure we didn't bother anyone upstairs. She was VERY rude to us because she could hear us. She told us we must go to bed and stood there - almost like am aggressive bully - waiting for us to go up to bed! Although I should have told her how she should run a hotel (ie by law you must serve your guests all night until they go to bed - when they WANT TO go to bed) but I thought it wasn't worth risking a dispute with a drunken, unprofessional, rude person.... We spent a small fortune in that bar all day. They should be more grateful!

Won't be going there again!

Booked this as I knew someone who'd stayed here. On arrival we were put in a top floor room. It was a "family room" but just had 2 bunkbeds stuffed in front of the window, blocking out any light which was enhanced by a decayed looking net. The window was sealed. It was stifling hot that weekend and we had to ask to be moved. Whereupon we were moved to a huge room with a round bed. Hideous dark brown walls, brown ceiling with lots of silly spotlights many of which had blown. Tea making facilities very basic. No hand towels. Another dingy thick net at the window. No fan in the room. Dark ceiling in bathroom, again with blown lights. Duvet cover had marks on it. The effect was manky brothel, almost as though the BBC had been in and used it for filming on a set for a comedy. Really depressing. NOT luxury as the website boasts. In fact I felt closed in because it was so dark and dingy. Which was ok because we were actually then moved on the 3rd night to a twin room. Which was better. Still no hand towels. Tea making stuff was not replenished/cleaned.

Breakfast was very basic. Tea was a bag plonked in a mug. Where is a teapot??! Coffee was better. Cheap white bread toasted. Cooking below par. Not enough choice. Had the feeling that breakfast was something they felt they had to offer begrudgingly after sleep. Bathroom was minute and could have been cleaner.

Don't get me started on the bar. It is actively a gay friendly place and indeed I sat with family while a gay couple were very cosy nearby. I am not prejudiced but this is not advertised on their website. As you enter the bar down some steep steps you are not met with tourist information, rather, a local gay community magazinge in pride of place. The noise at night was DEAFENING. This is a huge open bar which is obviously popular for clubbing scene but it is not hotel friendly.

On the plus side the manager Ailsa was friendly. She said it took her 8 hours a week to replace all the hallogen bulbs which constantly blow. The owner was ok but very timid.

Was aggrieved at paying the bill of £82 per night for 3 nights of discomfort. Left feeling itchy and relieved. Overall it is rather a hole. Which is a shame because the elderly building itself is very nice. Never again.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

Booked this b&b the night before we stayed (1st oct) and having read reviews on trip advisor was a bit worried, however it was great!
The room we stayed in (indulgence) was fab, very large with a sunken circular bed which was great! Yes it could do with a lick of paint but that was all!
Breakfast was fantastic and Ailsa who looked aver us was really lovely and friendly, a big thank you to her!!!!

We visited for a family wedding.
We had the whole of the bar in the evening, and the food was great. The staff were very attentive and helpful and all added up to a lovely night. Some guests stayed the night, but we were nearby. The room was decorated for the wedding and looked great in the evening lights. Music a wee bit loud for us oldies, but the younger ones loved it, and it was their wedding.
All in all a super night and no complaints at all.

We had a three night stay here. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. The breakfasts were excellent and kept us going for most of the day! Rooms were above the bar and were very clean and comfortable. No room numbers just names! Like Funky Bunky for example! The Hebden Bridge Blues Festival was on during our stay. It was loud! However, unless you go to bed quite early it shouldn't bother you. It is a pub so there will be noise at night. It is a quirky place to stay so I can understand the mixed reviews however the young and young at heart should have a really good stay here.

I have wanted to visit Hebden Bridge for years and finally managed it Bar Place was the only place with a room available and I thought the location was great right in the town and the room (Chill) looked pretty funky and different. After navigating to a car park as I knew there was no parking available it was just a short walk to the bar which luckily did have space to park down the side so car was moved later.

To book in you basically go to the bar but they do show you to your room, which was as the picture although to be truthful housekeeping could be a little better but I'm a bit of a clean freak.

Minor grumbling point was the TV didn't work but someone did come up and attend to it but couldn't get it working I have seen other reviews with this problem so wonder if it's more of a signal problem due to location, they did offer us the loan of a dvd though. It wasn't something that really bothered us to be honest but I could imagine if you liked to watch TV in bed this would really annoy you.

We had a great nights sleep even with the windows open, no noise other than tweety birds we went to bed before the disco downstairs had finished but didn't hear a thing from it.

Breakfast the bnext day was relaxed and very tasty, I would stay here again the staff are warm and friendly, the bar is nice and large and ideally placed and I was very happy with our room.

The Bar Place website is misleading. This is not a boutique hotel but a bar with rooms. The staff were very friendly but they are not focused on 'hotel service' - they are more attuned to running a bar. The room we stayed in (Lush) was immediately above the bar and was exceptionally noisy. We were phoned the week before to advise of a birthday party on the Saturday night, but we were not prepared for the dreadful open mic night on Thursday and were very grateful that we'd already decided to leave on Sunday morning before the Karaoke/DJ night. The room itself was OK but nowhere near a sumptuous as it looks on the website and the bed is way too big for the room, which means that it's difficult to navigate around it. My partner banged her head badly on the wall-mounted TV in the middle of the night. The room was not serviced all the time we were there (three nights) and when we asked for more toilet roll and teabags, we were informed that the chambermaid had run off with the spare keys. As this had happened over a week ago, it was difficult to accept the excuse that no locksmiths had been open. I agree with previous reveiws that the back stairs are awful and we often found the door open so the building is not particularly secure. There was a loud drunken argument at 2am one morning and it was not clear whether they were guests or just people who had got in. We didn't want to intervene as the man sounded quite aggressive and there is no phone in the room (and presumably no one to phone anyway as there is no 24 hour reception). Breakfast was OK - not great but OK - but the intrusive breakfast TV was unwelcome (it could be excused on Royal Wedding day - even though we'd left London to escape from all the hullabulloo) but not to be excused on other days. Once again, the staff were friendly and if you are attending an event in the bar and then staying overnight, then it is probably fine. But the website should be a bit more honest and the management more focused on the 'hotel' side of the business.
